Seraphine changed her route the moment she was sure Theo was no longer watching. Xavier had drawn his attention back to him, giving her time to look for the wounded dog.
Careful not to be seen, she took off her spectacle to enable her see clearly in the dark, taking cover from dark corners to avoid running into any of the workers.
She slipped into an empty large area where chairs were stacked, the smell of burning skin and fur still lingered in the air. Traces of blood which could have easily gone unnoticed by an ordinary eyes but not hers, it was glaring right back at her on the floor.
The room could be mistaken for an abandoned theatre, seeing the large podium and stacks of chairs except that it looked tidy and didn't seem to collect any speck of dust, wondering what sort of activity could be going on there, she quickly slipped out when she heard the manager's voice at the other end of the second door.
As she made her way to the door which they had passed earlier, she hesitated. Her heart raced more than usual, before she could wrap her hand round the knob, she heard the fast thudding of steps, looking for where to hide, she donned her spectacle when she saw a space behind a large pole but before she could, a middle size furry creature came barreling towards her.
Glad that it was a dog, calming her racing heart, she stared at a beautiful white fur dog with blue eyes, brushing down its fur as it's lapped her other hand.
Soon after, running footsteps followed, she looked up to see the manager paused to catch her breath, "there you are" pointing at the little creature, "we've been chasing after this mongrel till we lost sight of it" she looked round for Xavier before she spoke with a questioning look, "what are you doing here? How did you get here?"
Two other men joined them, breathing heavily, the woman signalled to one of them to take the dog from her but the barking which expressed it's objection made Seraphine cuddled the dog tighter.
"She doesn't want to let go, why not allow me carry her to where you want her to be" Seraphine suggested as she brushed her fur, she could see the look on their faces which showed otherwise.
"That won't be necessary" the woman approach, wanting to stretch her hands to take the dog but the sudden bark startled her.
Clearing her throat to smoothened her composure, she looked at Seraphine, "by the way, you've not answered my question? what are you doing in this part of the building?" Her sharp voice could be mistaken for a teacher scolding her student.
Seraphine's heart skipped a beat, she thought the prim woman had forgotten, racking her brain to think of what to say, "I missed my way" she blurted. Seeing the doubtful look on the woman's face, she added, "I must have made the wrong turn, I guess I wasn't attentive when Theo was explaining where I could relieve myself" following it with a short laughter to ease the tension.
Still holding on to the dog, "who owns this dog? Does she belongs to anyone yet?"
"No" the woman was not willing to speak further.
Seraphine was confused however decided to assume her negative response as needed the two questions "Can I adopt it?" With a hopeful look, she gazed at the woman, shoving what Mr. Pawn's reaction and opinion would be at the farthest part of her mind.
"No" she objected, a little bit too loud.
She wondered if the woman had any other negative vocabulary aside 'no'.
"Why?"
"I would also like to know" Xavier walked up to them, standing beside Seraphine, he gestured for the woman to start her reason by sweeping up his arms, "do enlighten us why she can't be adopted?"
