Leaning my head against the beanstalk, I stop for a moment

Leaning my head against the beanstalk, I stop for a moment. Hook is about a foot higher than me and Emma, somewhere below. I don't risk looking down to find out. My ears started ringing minutes ago and I'm not sure if I'm going to be sick or pass out.

"You alright?" I hear Emma's voice call from below. I don't answer, trying to focus on my breathing.

"I'm fine!" Hook calls out with a little chuckle.

"I wasn't talking to you." Emma snaps back. I swallow hard, the ringing in my ear beginning to subside.

"Love?" I can hear Hook's voice clearer now. I look up to see him looking at me, concerned. I take a deep breath before continuing the climb.

"I'm fine, Emma." I call out. "Just keep moving." I whisper to myself for what must be the thousandth time.

"First beanstalk, Kingsley?" Hook asks. He's clearly trying, to distract me, thinking I'm afraid. Despite his assumption being wrong, a distraction is still helpful. When I would climb mountains with Andy, he would ask me random questions, mostly about history and other such trivia whenever we'd climb an especially hard part of the mountain.

"I've climbed mountains, this is nothing." I brush off his concern and without thinking, I automatically say, "And it's Digby." The response was almost robotic, having gotten used to having to correct people. Now though, it seems unnecessary.

"Digby? I distinctly remember your last name being Kingsley." He remarks inquisitively. I open and close my mouth a couple of times before answering.

"It...was." His eyes widen slightly and his jaw clenches before he looks away.

"You-you're married." He states.

"You are?" Emma calls out in shock from below me. I laugh a little, rolling my eyes lightheartedly.

"Not as of a couple of days ago, so I guess I am Alice Kingsley once again." I say, almost as though I'm coming to the realization myself. I'm still getting used to that, being me again. Being free again.

"I'm sorry for your loss." Comes Hook's voice, sounding genuine.

"He's not dead. He simply found someone else." I say with an incredulous laugh, looking up in time to see him smile a little.

"Then he's a fool." He mutters. My cheeks turn red, wondering if I had misheard him.

"What'd you say?" I exclaim.

"Are you in love?" He asks avoidantly. I let out an annoyed sigh.

"No. I never was. At least not in a romantic sense." I reply. He shoots me a perplexed look.

"You married a man you didn't love?" He asks incredulously. I roll my eyes once again.

"I said I love him, just not romantically." I correct but he doesn't seem to be willing to move on.
