Mulan uses her blade to crush the poppy seeds into a fine powder.
"The powder's nearly ready." She glances over her shoulder.
Snow eases back against a tree.
"How long will the effects last?"
Emma drops beside her and gently grabs her hand.
"It's difficult to say. Maybe an hour. Or much less."
I slide down the tree next to Emma. The bark bites through my shirt as I settle against it.
"That sounds about right. The giant wasn't out for long." I say.
The tension leaves Snow's shoulders. Slightly.
"Well, I shouldn't need much time. So long as Henry is in there when I am." Snow says.
She gives Emma a small smile. I sigh wearily.
"I hope you don't mind, but I'm also gonna get some rest while I can. You guys will keep watch?" I ask, feeling the strings of exhaustion threatening to pull me under.
"Of course," Emma says.
My body sinks into the rough surface of the tree behind me. She turns her attention to her mother.
"I'll be right here. Say hi to my son for me."
Mulan rises, powder clenched in her fist, then steps in front of Snow and bends down. She uncurls her fist and delicately blows the powder in Snow's face.
Snow goes limp almost immediately. Her head tips to the side, lashes fluttering until her breathing deepens. For the first time in days, I close my eyes without bracing. My head drops heavily against Emma's shoulder. Sleep drags me under within seconds.

"Ow!"
My eyes shoot open as an elbow slams into my side. Snow is on her feet in seconds, sprinting toward the rock Mulan used to crush the powder. The one Mulan had used to make the powder. Emma stands up, wiping the dirt from her pants.
"What happened? What are you doing?" Emma asks.
Snow frantically drags her hands over the jagged rock. I push to my feet, my back cracking like old timber. I don't think bones are meant to sound like that.
