Having dinner with Andy was awkward.
At least at first.
It's clear that both of us are having trouble interacting with each other as friends now. I almost reached out and squeezed his hand, and his hug lingered for just a second too long. But I've never been good with awkward silences, so I began to ramble.
Mainly about work.
From there, it was like we were back to being best friends. Of course, it'll take longer than a dinner for us to actually heal. But this dinner gave me hope that things won't be cold between us.
I'm just thankful he doesn't hate me.
My phone rings in my pocket just as I'm heading back to the station. I pull it out to see Emma calling me. I cross my fingers before answering.
"Hello?"
"Oh, thank god you answered." She sounds like she just got done running, given how out of breath she is.
I nearly roll my eyes.
I crossed my fingers.
"Is everything all right?"
"No, everything that could've gone wrong, went wrong." She snaps.
"You didn't find Gold's son?"
"I did find him..."
"And that's bad...? I thought that's why you went there in the first place."
"Gold's son is Henry's father." The words fly out of her mouth so fast I almost couldn't comprehend them.
"What?" I exclaim.
"I know, I know! The millions of questions you have, I have too. The problem is, it doesn't matter right now because I don't know what to do." She sounds terrified.
"Are you going to tell Henry?"
"Henry thinks his father is dead. I lied for a reason. I wanna protect him."
"Emma, you spent your whole life trying to get closure on why your parents didn't want you. Don't do that to him." I plead gently..
"I don't want Henry to get hurt. I just want to protect him." She cries desperately.
"Emma, I'm sure that's true, but in this case... I think you're only protecting yourself." When she doesn't respond, I continue. "Listen, I'm not going to tell you what to do because I think you already know what I have to say, just... no matter what you choose, I'll be there for you, okay?""Okay. Thanks, Alice."
She sounds at least a tiny bit less frantic than she did when she started this call. Unfortunately, that's the most I can do for her.
"Don't mention it. I'll talk to you later."
"Talk to you later."
