King Midas's castle is ugly. The entire place is made of gold. I love gold but not this much. Even his knights are dressed in gaudy gold armor. I have my arm looped through Killian's as we make our way through the door with no issue, laying our invitation on top of the others.
"Not even my mother could get me to wear a corset, petticoat, or heels. Let alone, all three." I grumble under my breath. It's been over three decades since I last attended a stuffy ball but not long enough if you ask me. Killian smirks, glancing down at me.
"You may not be able to move, love, but you cut quite the figure in that dress." He says and I can't help but smile a little. At least I'm in good company this time around.
"Greetings." A cheerful voice catches me off guard. I look over to see King Midas himself walking over to greet us. "I'm King Midas, father of the bride. Who do I have the honor to welcome into my home?"
"I am..." Killian trails off, unsure. I wince at the confused look King Midas gives him.
"Prince Oberyn." I answer for him quickly. I'll never hear the end of it if Emma finds out I made a Game of Thrones reference in the enchanted forest. "And I'm Princess Daenerys." And with that, I curtsy, fighting the urge to roll my eyes. If only my mother could see me.
"An honor to have you both." King Midas says with a pleased smile before turning his attention to one of his knights. "Announce Prince Oberyn and Princess Daenerys."
As we walk away, I fight the urge to laugh as the knight in question calls out our fake names. We make our way further into the party until we come across the dance floor. The band is playing some boring violin music while men and women dance a boring dance.
I've always hated balls, even as a little girl. They sound fun in theory, but in practice...they're a nightmare. Everyone is forced to wear whatever proper at the time and you have to dance with people you barely know while making small talk about things you don't care about.
"Not a fan of the waltz I take it?" Killian asks me when a knowing look. I scoff.
"It's boring and I'm bad at it. I used to wear slippers under my gowns to spare Andy's toes the trauma." I say with a small self deprecating chuckle. Before I know it, Killian practically snatches my hand in his and begins leading me towards the dance floor.
"That's because you haven't had a proper partner." He says, looking at me over his shoulder with an arrogant smile. I let out an incredulous laugh.
"Wait," I say. "Are you saying you know how to dance the waltz?"
He doesn't answer, except for a charming grin that adorns his face. He places my hand that he'd been holding on his shoulder and I grab his fake hand with my right. I look down at my feet instinctively but his hand quickly finds its way under my chin, tilting my head up so I'm looking at him.
"Eyes on me, love." He says softly, bringing his real hand around to wrap around my waist. I don't respond, speechless. I'm someone who always has an answer, always a witty remark at the tip of my tongue. But words aren't necessary between me and Killian. Somewhere along the way, we've begun to speak our own language through our eyes alone.
Our noses are touching as we begin to move. We dance like this for a while, just enjoying the moment. Despite being in a room full of people, it feels like we're the only two people in the world. An uncontrollable smile begins to break across my face when I realize I haven't stepped on his feet or bumped into anyone the entire time. Killian doesn't know why I'm smiling but he smiles back at me regardless. I think about telling him now. Telling him I love him but I notice a familiar figure walking past us. I pull back slightly.
"There goes David." I whisper, somewhat bitterly at the reminder of why we're here. Before he can respond the doors to the ballroom swing open loudly and everyone turns to see the Evil Queen herself sauntering into the ballroom. I inhale sharply before remembering the glamour spell Rumpelstiltskin had used on us.
"Breathe, love. She's a guest. The King's head would vanish to another realm if he didn't invite her." Killian whispers in my ear but I shake my head.
"Snow's here." I say, eyeing Regina carefully. "If she finds her..."
"My lord, the bandit Snow White was spotted in the castle." As if on cue, a knight close by informs the King of her presence. I feel my heart stutter in my chest as me and Killian share a quick glance with each other.
"Dammit. Here? Go find her." King Midas orders and as inconspicuously as we can, me and Killian take the opportunity to slip away. We have to find her first.
