I was born deaf and growing up, it was pretty difficult to do anything in life, but no impossible. For me, friendships, relationships, and school as well were pretty hard to manage.
No one really knew sign language - especially since they stopped really teaching it. I've dated a few people who broke up with me solely because of my inability to hear or speak to them.
That was until I met Hailee.
I've never met anyone like her who was more passionate about anything and everything. The first time we met, it was a blind date and I half expected her to just turn away the second she found out I was deaf. But, when we first met at her house for an at-home dinner date, she didn't turn me away. Instead, she welcomed me in and since she didn't know sign language at all, we spent the whole night almost playing charades and writing notes to each other like we were back in high school.
Hailee was more than determined to learn sign language for me and me only. And it was the main reason I fell in love with her. Her willingness to do that just so she could properly communicate with me meant the world. No one had ever done it before.
I was currently sitting on the couch, reading a book in my hands. One thing that did bug me a bit about being deaf was the silence. It was deafening. Sometimes it made me feel like I was going crazy. Yet, at the same time, the peacefulness of it made me feel a little calm.
I felt the couch dip in front of me which made me shut my book and look up. I saw my beautiful girlfriend sitting in front of me with a huge smile on her face.
"I have a surprise for you." One thing I got really good at doing was lip reading. Especially when it came to Hailee. I nodded and smiled, signaling her to go on.
She shifted slightly before straightening her posture. 'Hi, baby, how are you?' She signed slowly, but correctly, making sure she got it right along the way.
I gasped and placed a hand over my mouth, smiling just as wide as she was. 'You learned? For me?'
'Absolutely, my love.' I surged forward and immediately collapsed into her body, hugging her for dear life.
'I love you.' She tapped in Morse code on my back so we didn't have to break the hug - another thing we got good at together.
'I love you more, my perfect Hailee.' I just know she's the one.
