Sighing, I unloaded the last packed box of my belongings from the living quarters area of my trailer, taking a deep breath as reality was beginning to consume me. It had been four years. Four years since I, quite literally, ghosted Zak and disappeared from the face of the Earth.
For context, that night when I was supposed to assist in their investigation at the Winchester Mystery house, I had a terrible nightmare the night before it became a reality.
I had gotten scared out of my skin. I wanted to blame him for it, but I knew it wasn't his fault.
That following morning after it happened, I immediately resigned from my job at Bobby Mackey's without an explanation except for saying that I had a family emergency, but Bobby knew me better than that as I had no members of my family who were close to me, let alone alive. I was too scared to be in my own house, too scared to reach out and talk to Zak about it, and I desperately felt like I needed a fresh, new start. I had refused to sleep the night I found a house I wanted over a thousand miles away that literally was a dream come true.
I remembered telling Zak how bad I wanted to go out west, and I surely found it.
A little house nestled in Springdale, Utah. It was a perfect horse property, too, that was also close to the Zion National Park.
It took about three weeks to debate and decide on it financially, but to my benefit, I had enough for a big down payment as well as a good interest rate with the local bank there, and I certainly thanked my mother in Heaven for teaching me how important it was to save as much money as you could as well with having a good credit score.
It was fully furnished for me, and the only thing I had missing was putting myself and horses there to call it a home.
My route was planned perfectly: avoid toll roads, drive for no more than eight hours a day for the horse's comfort, plenty of hay and water, "horse hotels" booked (and yes, those do exist!), extra money for emergencies, plenty of feed and shavings, truck was inspected and maintained acutely as well as extra fluids and road-side kits, plenty of non-perishable food and water to avoid spending extra on food along the way, and most importantly: my route was planned the best route that was easiest on my truck.
After about four days, I was finally in Utah, and it was a literal breath of fresh air. Less humidity, consistent climate, a breath-taking view, and now a new home to start over.
A week after I resigned from Bobby Mackey's, I picked up a remote job, which was perfect since I was able to still earn money and travel, and all I did was key in insurance information and take calls from clients and doctors.
So, during my four days of travel, my horses would be at their "horse hotel" while I would be in the living quarters of my then-cluttered trailer working off of the provided internet hotspot and equipment.
