Hillary

My entire being hummed.

Not just because of how proud I was of Salex, but because for the first time since everything had started happening, there was a very real possibility of success. Oren was beginning the transition to our ship. The women who had woken up were all taking it reasonably well.

And my mate and our youngling was healthy and strong. At least that's what Lylta had just told me.

Putting his tools to the side, the Trenzian male faced me, his expression wary. "Why do I feel like you're about to ask me to do something?"
"Probably because I am," I rolled sideways, then paused to accept the males hand as he guided me to a seated position. It got harder and harder every day to maintain my usual movements. This belly was getting big. And if I had anything to say about it, would keep getting big for a few more weeks. While Lylta was still worried about Kait going into labor first, I was still the furthest along out of everyone.

Since most ladies were going to be in hypersleep for the next few months, it hadn't really mattered how far along we'd been to being with, but now the variation was interesting, maybe even a little exciting.

"I actually have two things."

"Of course you do," Lylta sighed, rising to his feet and stretching out his arms as he waited.

"What are you doing?"

"Preparing to defend myself after I do something for you that gets my ass kicked by the Alpha Commander."

"It's not that bad," I clucked my tongue at him, "Dramatic aliens. I just wanted to know if I could have the list of surrogates and their matches."

"Why?"

"Because if the women stay I was going to offer to be a sort of chaperone while they meet."

"Does Salex know about this?"

"He will after you give me the folder."
Lylta's eyes narrowed, "No."

"No?"

"No. These women trusted me with all their information. You can ask them after they decide to stay and all contracts about information are broken."

I pouted, "I want to help."
"You can help by being a good guide for the ladies on board and by taking good care of yourself. Not by interfering in their decisions."

"I wasn't going too-."

"Lylta's right," a deep voice rumbled from the door, "You need to take care of yourself first." Salex moved into, nodding to his head medic. "Did I miss everything?"
"It was only a quick scan. Everything looked great," I reached for his hand, smoothing my thumb over the rough skin. Salex's face remained disappointed.

"I'm sorry, Hillary, I will be better."

"After Oren and his team have made all the adjustments, then you can come to every appointment I have. Right Lylta?"

"Yes, wonderful," Lylta agreed, resuming his cleanup routine.

Salex flashed a small bit of fang as he curled me closer. "Come home with me, I have a small break."

I looked up at him, immediately feeling the rush of heat as his golden eyes find mine. "A break?"

But then he was already moving, half-holding me, half ushering me through the hallways in a flurry of his uniform until we were suddenly in his rooms.

I swallowed, my throat tight as I stared up at him. His expression changed in an instant, going from hungry and aroused and soft.

"Hillary, what's wrong?"
