I surprisingly had a restful night last night, considering all the hustle and bustle of the past few days. I was sure I'd be tossing and turning, trying to make sure everything was perfect for today. I've had these details planned for a while now, so I should have everything settled and ready for tonight. It's an important day, after all. I can't forget! He'd be so hurt if I forgot.
I know he's already away, what a busy man. I wonder if he even remembers! I can't be too upset with him though. I got a glimpse of his schedule for the day and he's constantly running around this building. Poor guy is either stuck in virtual meetings or having to sit in conference rooms with Hellish partners. I doubt he'd even eat if he didn't have his amazing secretary. I'm glad he finally hired someone worth a damn.
Everyone in the tower is always so friendly. I get smiles and waves anytime I'm around. It's hard to remember I'm actually in Hell when I'm in these walls. As I'm leaving the tower I get stopped by one of Velvette's employees.
"(y/n)!" They yell, catching my attention. I walk up to them and smile.
"Hey, what's up?" I ask. Then it hits me. "Oh! Is it about the outfit?" I ask, excited about the possibility.
They laugh a little. "Yep! Velvette designed it herself. Said it would be perfect for your special day!" They seem just as excited as I am. "Do you want me to drop it off in your room?" They ask.
"If it's not too much trouble, that would be wonderful. I have to head out and grab something. I should be back soon!" I explain, getting a small bow from them before heading out of the building.
When I step out of the tower, I'm reminded where I truly am. Fighting in the streets, drugs around every corner, literal Hellfire down the alleys. Yet somehow that's not going to bring me down today!
The butcher shop is only a few blocks away. Plus, I'm not exactly an obscure figure anymore. Most demons know that if they fuck with me, he'll be around shortly. Not that I can't defend myself, but it's always nice knowing he has my back. I open the door to the shop I wave to the shopkeeper. I can tell by the look in their eyes that they're a little intimidated once they see me. That is the downside of being so close to him though, people are afraid of me. No matter how nice I am, they're afraid of doing something wrong. If they do something wrong, he'll make them pay.
"M-morning (y/n)!" The shopkeeper stutters. They still have a big smile on their face though. "Looking for something in particular?" They ask.
"Well, it's a special day today. I was hoping for something special. He's a fan of flat iron steaks, have any of those by chance?" I ask politely. I don't want them to be nervous around me.
"Yeah! I'll get you our best! For sure!" They state. They still sound nervous. As they're looking through their cuts of meat, I hear them recommend. "You know, we also have a special going on for venison." Their voice sounded off for a second there. Oddly... distorted. So dark.
"Um... no, thank you... just the flat iron steaks, please." I'm sure the confusion is evident in my voice by what just happened. The shopkeeper doesn't seem phased though. Also, who would want venison? I'm sure there's some crazed demon around here that would love it.
Once I get the fancy cut of steak I was looking for, I make my way back to the tower. The hours fly by fast when you have plans. I want to make the steaks as perfect as I can. Also, the dress Velvette designed is perfect! I love the navy-blue color and how it hugs every curve I have. I'm lucky to have someone in the building who can design a wardrobe specifically for me.
I wonder if the heels, dangling earrings and matching necklace are too much. It's not my everyday attire. But I want to look cute today!
I look at the clock again. He'll be back any minute now! I check the plates again, making sure the food is still warm. I double check and see that I have the wine bottle sitting in ice at the table. I light the candle on the table and quickly put the lighter on the counter as I finally hear the doorknob turn.
"Hey honey. Hope I'm not-" Vox stops mid-sentence as he looks at the dinner table, a big smile on his face. "You didn't have to do all of this." He sounds both grateful and a bit bashful of my efforts. I love it.
"Happy anniversary!" I say in a very happy tone as I walk up to hug him, giving him a small kiss on his cheek and pulling the jacket off his shoulders. "I wanted to do something special today. I know you had to work, so I figured I'd surprise you!" I say as I hang up his jacket.
"You're so fricking sweet." Vox says as he looks over the food and grabs the wine bottle, working on opening it.
"So, you've been keeping yourself pretty busy then it looks like?" Vox questions. "You haven't run into any... troubles, have you?" He asks as he pours two glasses of wine. "Also, you look absolutely stunning." Vox mentions with a sincere smile on his face.
I shake my head and blush a little. "Thanks." I say shyly. I'll have to thank Velvette again later. "No troubles today, I'm fine. Nothing for you to worry about." I state as I walk over to the counter. "Would you mind if I turned the radio on?" I ask as I turn the knob.
"Radio?!" Vox questions. He sounds panicked. I hear him put the wine bottle down, followed by his rapid footsteps. What's wrong with the radio?
"Darling, (y/n), you need to snap out of it. It's not real."
I don't recognize that distorted, dark, demonic staticky voice. Why is my name on the radio? How do they know me? Why did they call me darling? Why are they talking directly to me?
"How the f-fuck is this happening?!" Vox yells from behind me. His sudden anger is alarming. I haven't heard him glitch like that in a long time. He sends an electric current to the radio, frying the machine. I can't hear anything coming out of it anymore.
"Vox?" I ask quietly. What's going on? I'm so confused. I just wanted a nice dinner with Vox for our anniversary. I don't understand why the radio is making him so upset. I don't know how the demon over the radio knows who I am.
Vox lets out a hefty sigh, his hands on his hips. "Fine. We'll try this again and do it your way, Val." Vox says as he rolls his eyes. It's like he's talking to Valentino, but I'm the only one here.
"Vox, what's going on?" I ask him again. Why is he ignoring me?! "Vox! Tell me what's happening!" I demand at this point. He still hasn't answered me.
"Reboot. Begin simulation 1.02." Vox states to no one in particular.
