After what I can only describe as the weirdest day of my afterlife, it was finally nighttime. We were lucky enough to be left alone by the rest of the group like I requested. I really think this helped Alastor through the overwhelming emotions that today brought. It seems he was just as shocked to learn about her existence as I was.
We learned a little more about her throughout the day. We learned that she does indeed like venison, more than anything else. She will eat other meats, but try to give her an apple and she'll spit it out. She does seem to possess some sort of demonic power, but it's unclear exactly what she can do. She can build up energy, but it never turns into something. She truly believes that Alastor and I are her mom and dad. She doesn't seem to have any memories before today, but has an unwavering commitment to being our daughter. Maybe she really did come out of nowhere.
Just like any other small child, she had endless energy earlier and now she's dead asleep. I tucked her into my bed, at least until we can figure out a better solution. It doesn't seem to matter if the lights are on or if there's sound happening around her. She's just out!
Alastor and I are sitting at the edge of my bed. We're pretty focused on her, just making sure that she is indeed asleep. Once the both of us seem satisfied that she's safe and in dreamland, I look over at him.
"So, what happened?" I ask him.
Alastor lets out a big sigh as he puts his hand over mine, holding onto it tightly. It seems like whatever he has to say he doesn't want to.
"(y/n)... I..." Alastor hesitates as he looks around the room suddenly, like he's afraid.
"You're safe here." I remind him. "I'm not going to tell anyone." I'm surprised I need to remind him of that at this point.
"It's not that." Alastor states as he continues scanning the room. Once he seems satisfied, he focuses back on me. "(y/n)... I'm in a deal with Charlie's mother, Lilith." He states. That's pretty surprising news. I had no idea. How did I not know for this long?!
"It's not that I want to keep secrets from you, that's not it." Alastor clarifies the worries I had in my mind. "I just want to keep you safe." He explains.
"Don't you think if I knew, I would be safer?" I question.
"Not necessarily." Alastor counters. "I figured the farther away you were from any part of it, the better off you'd be." The gesture sure is thoughtful. "My soul duty to Lilith is to keep Charlie safe. I'm not supposed to have any distractions during my... job." Alastor hesitates on the word, not sure exactly what to refer to it as.
"And I'm guessing Lilith sees the relationship we've built as a distraction." It's not a question, it's a statement. I look down at Emma. "So, what about her?" I ask Alastor.
"I'm guessing Lilith created her to test me." Alastor explains. As he looks down at her he runs one of his hands through her hair and past her ear, making it twitch. A small smile forms on her face as she shuffles a little in her sleep. "I'm afraid she'll put me in a situation where I may have to choose between the two of you and Charlie." He explains, looking back at me. "I'll choose you. I'll always choose you." He quickly states. "But in doing so, I'll break my end of the deal with Lilith."
"And what will that do to you?" I ask him.
Alastor lets out a small laugh. I can hear that it comes from nerves, not from something he finds funny. "If I break my end of the bargain, Lilith gets my mind." I don't fully understand, but that sounds detrimental. "I'll become a mindless puppet for her. She'll be able to use me for whatever she wishes. Even if I truly don't want it." Alastor averts his eyes from me, looking at the floor.
I move so that my hand is now holding his, grabbing it tightly. This causes him to look back up at me. "I won't let that happen." I state confidently. As much as I wish my statement made him feel better, I can see that it doesn't.
"I appreciate it, (y/n). But Lilith is extremely powerful, my love. More powerful than I am." Alastor seems mentally defeated. He truly seems worried.
I need to keep in mind that everything Alastor has said so far has been fact. The details of their deal, and the fact that Lilith is indeed more powerful than he is. Knowing these facts, what can we do?
My fox ears perk up as an idea hits my brain. Alastor looks at me with confusion. "Is there a way we can create a scenario where she won't want you anymore?" I ask him. He still looks confused.
"I'm not exactly sure how you think that could happen, my love." Alastor still seems a bit down, but he's willing to listen to my plan.
"What if your mind was already compromised?" I ask him. Alastor now looks a bit concerned. Understandable. "You said if you break your end of the deal you have with her, she controls and owns your mind. But what if your mind is tailored so differently than what it is now, that she wouldn't even want it?" I wait a bit, seeing if he has anything to say.
There are seconds upon seconds of silence between us. All I can hear is Emma's slow breathing as she sleeps. "No questions so far?" I somewhat joke with Alastor, seeing if I can get him to say anything.
"I'm not entirely sure I follow." Alastor finally responds. "You want to scramble my brain? To change me?" He asks. "I don't like this plan." He plainly states.
"I know, I know." I wave my free hand in defense. "It's scary. But it would only be temporary. Just enough for Lilith to lose her interest in you. See you as... broken." I try to think of a better word, but 'broken' just slips out. I can see the look of disgust on his face.
"You being anything but perfect is unacceptable, right?" I question. "So, we need to make you-"
"Don't say it." Alastor interrupts me. I stop my sentence and look up at him, watching him sigh. "I understand. I've just... I've been working so that I don't have to hear you call me that anymore." Alastor explains. Ah, I see.
"Fair enough." I try to get back on track, but he finally has a question.
"How do you plan on making this happen, mon cher?" Alastor asks.
I knew this would be the hard part. We may stay awake for a while. But to start, I need him to do a couple of things.
"I need you to set me free." I explain. This makes Alastor chuckle a little.
"That was always the plan." He states, this makes me confused. Seeing my confusion, he still doesn't clarify. I open my mouth to ask him to clarify, but before I can get a word out, he puts one hand on my cheek gently.
He rests his forehead on mine, his soft eyes looking into mine. "I trust you. I'll do whatever you need, my love." He states, making me smile. He sure knows how to distract me.
