Just some notes : First, this chapter is slightly longer than most. Only by like 150 words, but I appreciate the understanding that I needed this one slightly longer to not lose content. I try to remain consistent for the most part.
Second, we are only one more weekend away (secretly two... shh) from the finale of this story! It's so crazy to think of! I am just so incredibly thankful to all of you for your continued support throughout this journey. Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU!
When this story ends it does not mean I am done. There have been small mentions of my next project here and there. And if you haven't seen them, I'll leave a pretty obvious hint in the last chapter. (And if you don't see it, maybe it's not the last chapter...)
Thank you all again, and enjoy the rest of the show!
We stayed up for quite a bit, going over the details of my proposed plan. After a few more hours of discussion and questions, we finally agreed that some sleep would be a good idea. I'm not sure if a child of Emma's age sleeps a full night. But so far, she's proving to be an easy child. I expected to stay the night under the covers with Emma, making sure that she was safe and comfortable. What I did not expect was for Alastor to snap his fingers, change into a set up comfortable looking pajamas, and then slip under the covers on the other side of Emma. The confusion on my face is evident, capturing his attention.
"Did you really expect me to leave my girls?" Alastor asks, his tone almost offended. He's really adjusting to this role quickly. Or at least he's pretending to. I'm not quite sure. Maybe he's just doing the same as me. Enjoying the blessings and not trying to worry about how we got here.
I can't help but chuckle a little. "No, I wouldn't even entertain the thought." I respond, looking from him back to the still sleeping Emma.
Alastor pulls the covers up just a tad more to go over Emma's shoulder, looking back at me. "Good night, my love." He says quietly as his shadow travels the wall, turning off the light.
And soon, all of us are asleep.
The next morning, we start putting our plan into motion. The first step is getting our newly added... partner, to help us with some work.
"Let me get this straight..." Even when Velvette is frustrated and confused, her accent is still amazing. Now that she has a deal with Alastor, getting her to the hotel isn't difficult. But some of the other hotel staff and guests are still a bit on edge.
"You want me to create a post that somehow depicts Charlie Morningstar in danger?" Velvette asks as she sits at the other end of the dining table. Her eyes shift to the movements of our small girl. "Also... who the fuck, and how the fuck?" Velvette asks as she motions to Emma.
Emma looks from Velvette back to me, confused, tilting her head. "How the fuck, momma?" She asks, trying to mimic Velvette's accent. Ugh! I never really considered the logistics of raising a small child in Hell! Also, how can she still sound so fricking adorable when swearing?!
"I'd prefer if you didn't use that language in front her." Alastor says to Velvette through gritted teeth, obviously extremely irritated and trying to hold back his immense anger at her. Probably her one and only warning.
"Long story for another time, Velvette." I respond calmer, picking Emma up and putting her in one of the chairs. "We need your expertise to post something that shows or depicts Charlie being in danger." I continue, opening the fridge and pulling out a bag of cut up red meat. "We obviously don't want her in real danger, but we want all of Hell to think she is. It's not like anyone is really going to do anything. They'll be glued to their phones waiting for your next update." I turn the stove on and start heating up Emma's breakfast.
"If you do a convincing enough job, we'll pull a particular demon out of hiding. One that cares if Charlie would be in danger or not. You understand, yes?" Alastor questions Velvette. I can see the wheels start turning in her head.
"I'm starting to follow." She explains. I'm not sure if she knows exactly who we are talking about, but she understands the plan. "Do you have anything I can use? Videos? Pictures?" Velvette questions. "If not, can't you just shapeshift or something?" She moves her hand around as she asks.
"Actually..." I mutter, thinking about it. I use my light blue fire to shapeshifter into Charlie Morningstar. "Like this?" I look myself over. I still sound like myself but look just like the princess of Hell.
"Looks perfect." Velvette stands up and points her phone at me. "Now strike a pose that looks painful." She states.
"Um." I think about it and huddle over, holding my stomach and hanging my head low. "Like this?" I ask.
"Stand up." Velvette says, unamused. I follow her directions as she walks closer. Once she's in front of me, she swiftly swipes her leg at the back of my ankles, making me fall on the floor ungracefully.
"Vel-" Before Alastor can finish his angry threat, we hear the shutter sound of her phone. I look up at Alastor, ensuring him that I'm fine.
"Got it." Velvette states confidently. She doesn't even look at me, sitting back at the table and playing with her phone.
I notice the bandage on her hand as she types. It's the same hand I attacked when Alastor and I fought them at their tower. It must still be healing.
"Are we not going to talk about... this?" Velvette points to Emma, snapping me out of my thought.
"I'm Emma!" Emma says enthusiastically.
"That's Emma." I jokingly repeat as I fully stand up and shift back to my normal self. "She's... well..." How do I explain this right now?
"She's our daughter." Alastor states as he turns the stove off, not even turning around to see the shock on Velvette's face. Hell, the shock on MY face since he just plainly states it.
"Wh-..." Velvette seems at a loss for words. I can understand that. "How?!" She finally asks.
"That's not important." Alastor states confidently as he puts a plate of cut up cooked meat in front of Emma, who starts bouncing up and down in her chair with excitement. Alastor hands her a fork before looking at Velvette with his hands behind his back. "What is important is you finishing the task you were assigned." He still sounds so threatening. It's interesting to see him shift from gently giving an eating utensil to a small, adorable child to deathly threatening our associate within a few seconds.
"I've pretty much got it done. Calm the f-" Velvette stops herself as she sees the green glow grow around Alastor. "Cool your jets. Jesus." She corrects herself. She shows us the screen of her phone. "Something like this?" She asks.
Alastor is looking at the screen from a distance, but I lean in to get a closer look.
"Oh God! That's... ugh." I feel like I'm going to be sick. "How did you make it look so... messed up? She looks beaten to a pulp!" I ask Velvette.
"That's not important." She repeats Alastor's earlier words. She's pretty funny, I'll give her that. "If I send this out, all of Hell will think she's in quite the predicament." Velvette explains to us. "I didn't want her to look dead. But maybe, defeated?" She questions. "Should it say anything specific?" She asks.
"No no, this is good. But poor Charlie." I mutter. I know it's not real, but even seeing a fake photo of her so beat up hurts my heart. "A caption?" I question, thinking. "How about something like, 'she didn't even see it coming!'" I recommend.
Velvette starts typing and then shows me her screen again. She added a few things.
'Holy Shit! She didn't even see it coming! I wonder if she'll get back up!' A great caption with a fantastic fake photo.
"Looks great! Send it." I tell Velvette. She shrugs and sends the fake picture to all of Hell. It doesn't take long before both mine and Velvette's phones are constantly binging from updates and shares from her post. "Dang, that was fast."
"Well, I mean, I am the queen of social media." Velvette gloats.
"Thank you, Velvette, I appreciate your help." It's a sincere thank you, and I think she can tell. I look over at Alastor. "You ready for part two?" I ask him.
"As ready as I'll ever be." Alastor responds, looking at Emma. "Let's make sure she's in a safe place first." He recommends.
