Christmas break is over, so that means more unbearable time with Professor Umbridge. I'm totally excited.

I walk into the Great Hall wearing a pink headband. Next to me is Grayson.

"New headband?" he asks.

"Something I got for Christmas," I say coldly.

He doesn't understand my tone as I sit in my normal seat, no room left for him. Rolling his eyes, he walks off and sits with Preston. They're friends I think... What the hell?

I ignore it as Louis asks, "Are you two fighting?"

"He didn't get me anything for Christmas," I point out.

Louis' expression hardens, "Seriously?"

"I tried to let it slide when he forgot my birthday, but I can't anymore."

"He forgot your birthday?" Louis sounds angry.

"I mean, he still doesn't know—"

"Hey Grayson!" he calls out across the table. My heart drops.

"Louis, no—" I whisper.

"Her birthday is July 27th, 1979, idiot!"

Grayson looks over, confused. I look at Louis, also confused. How did he even remember that? I haven't talked to him about stuff like that in 10 years.

Later on in breakfast, I notice Louis glancing at my headband from time to time before looking at his plate and smiling to himself. His smile makes me smile.

"Fight it!" Snape shouts.

"I can't!" I shout back, panting heavily.

"You and Potter can't do this for the life of you!"

"We've been doing this for three days, Snape! Do you know how long the Patronus Charm took to master?"

"I don't know, nor do I care," he grumbles, setting his wand back down. I lean back in the chair, squeezing my eyes shut in pain, memories flashing in my mind like a train passing through short tunnels. Some of them are lovely fields, others are castles on fire, crumbling to the ground. He sighs and speaks again, "Same time tomorrow."

I nod, taking a deep breath before rising to my feet and walking out silently. Mentally, I am exhausted. I want to crash out on the spot, but all I can do is walk to the Room of Requirement. Harry wants to teach the Patronus charm. Great. The one charm that Louis has a direct tie to. I can't escape him.

Ever.

I walk into the Room of Requirement and am obviously late. Everyone stares at me as I walk in. I catch Louis' eye, but it doesn't last long.

"Alright, time to start!" Harry says. He talks about the Patronus Charm and how it works before saying, "Makayla will be our example."

"Excuse me—?" I ask as he pushes me forward. Taking a deep breath, I raise my wand to the ceiling and say, "Expecto Patronum."

I do it blankly, not even trying to think of a happy memory. Unsurprisingly, nothing happens.

"Happy memories, Makay—"

I cut Harry off, "Yeah, I know, shut up."

I do it again, thinking of Grayson. Nothing. What does one think of when their life is anything but happy? I do it again. I think of something my mind instinctively runs to—the kiss. Louis' kiss, a kiss better than any other. Better than my first, better than Grayson. For some reason it was perfect.

It worked.

Out of my wand slithers a Runespoor. I never exactly saw what my Patronus was when I first did the charm in fourth year, so this feels sort of surreal. It slithers around me in a circle before disappearing through a grate in the floor.

Everyone in the classroom claps. Hary says a few more things before spreading everyone out around the room.

They start practicing their Patronus Charms and I notice Louis having trouble. I go over to help him for some reason.

"Need help?" I ask playfully.

"I don't think I'm moving my wand right..." he murmurs.

Smiling, I gently grab his wrist, guiding his arm to point the wand to the ceiling. I notice he's a bit tense at the action.

"Jerk your wand as you do it," I say.

He tries again, a Chestnut Stallion horse galloping out of his wand and jumping over Annie before disappearing.

I smile, "Chestnut Stallion is pretty ironic."

"What's it mean?" he asks.

"You're a brave risk taker," I explain, playfully nudging his side. "Ironic right?"

"More like—wait... Hey!"

I laugh at his reaction but am quickly shut up by a loud bang from the door. We've managed to keep the Room of Requirement secret for months now, and if I'm right, it looks like someone's trying to break in. It's not everyday that a Patronus Charm makes the whole room shake.

Nigel looks through the hole in the wall that the bang created. Behind the wall, Umbridge's voice says, "I'll make quick work of this!"

Quickly, I rush over, pulling Nigel away from the wall just before Umbridge says a spell that sends the wall tumbling down. I turn my back toward the wall and squint my eyes, saying a protection spell in my mind as if it would work.

My hair blows into my face as I open my eyes. Around us is a dark-colored dome, which kept us from getting hit by debris. After a quick moment, the dome disappears.

"Get them!" Umbridge shouts.

Grayson suddenly grabs me, his arm wrapped around the front of my shoulders as he whispers in my ear, "What are you?"
