When they entered, they were hit with a wave of nostalgia and lingering sadness. All the times they would come here when their father would bring them in over the holidays or just when he wanted to. Megan can see the memory of her sitting by his desk, coloring in her notebook, as her father handled the paperwork. The walls had a few drawings of himself she had made when she was younger.
Just the idea of cleaning this room out felt like a nightmare, but it had to be done. Old files had to be removed and sent back to the file room while personal belongings were stored in a separate box. When they were almost finished with collecting the belongings, Frank gently knocked on the doorframe, "Megan. I'm not sure if this is a good time... but there is something your father left behind that you'd want to see."
She slowly headed over towards Frank and he gently held up a small box, "It was supposed to be a surprise, but I think right now you should look at it." Her hands gently grasp the box, lifting the lid to reveal a police badge. It had her name engraved on it, her own badge. She couldn't hold back a surprised gasp when she saw it, holding the box close to her heart she weakly smiled as her tears formed.
Leon gently held her close, "It's okay, Megan..." gently wiping away her tears. She let out a sniffle, "Wow... I... don't know what to say." Frank ruffled her hair, "You don't have to say anything, I'm sure he's looking down on you with a proud smile. Here, take this also."
He placed another badge on her hand, but it wasn't just a simple badge. It was her father's badge. "I figured you'd want to keep this too..." Her finger gently grazed against the name, she glanced at Leon and gently handed him the badge, "Leon... I think you should keep it..."
"What? Are you sure Megan? I... I can't just-"
Megan shook her head, "I insist, he gave it to you. For a reason."
"But Megan, you've always dreamt of being handed this badge, I can't accept this."
"Leon please... I thought that this badge was more important than anything in the world. I lost sight of what's important... I can't lose that again... Besides..." she gently placed the badge into his hand, closing them with his fingers, "I want you to keep this, so part of him is always there..."
His eyes glanced at the badge in his palm, with a small nod he set the badge into his pocket and wrapped his arms around her for a warm embrace, "Thanks Megan, this means so much to me."
She gently pats his back, "Yeah... and I don't want anything to come between us again..." With that, they both finished cleaning out the office, Leon took one glance at the desk with a slight smile. "Leon, double-check if we took everything okay? I'll make sure the boxes are secured." She walked alongside Frank, leaving him alone.
The drawers and everything else seemed all cleaned out, personal belongings safely intact and no stone left unturned. Megan closed the trunk door of Leon's jeep with a huff, "Hopefully that's all of it." The small sound of her fingers tapping on the trunk was louder than her gentle sigh, catching Frank's attention. "You know Megan... I was thinking if you needed to spend more time grieving about everything that happened... You can. I'm sure the precinct will understand. You don't have to come in tomorrow."
"Honestly I doubt I'd be ready after what happened, with my mom and all. But that doesn't mean I will prolong it, maybe a few more days can help me. One thing for sure is that I'll call when I am ready."
"That's good kiddo."
Megan starts to call out for Leon, "Hey Leon, did we get everything?" Leon walked over to her, "Yeah, we did. Let's head home now." She softly smiled and hugged Frank one more time before they had to head back home. Megan sat down on the passenger seat with a sigh, "Man... I'm definitely gonna need some time off this whole thing... Frank said I don't have to come to work tomorrow, that I should take a few days to recover."
