Frank let out a deep sigh. It was hard for him to see someone dear to him spiral down like that. He then spotted a seat near the hospital bed. "I know you want to make amends with Megan, and since she finally came home, she needs to know the truth. It's a tough pill to swallow, but we both know if you don't tell her, she might."
Jake clenched his fist and groans in frustration. "I don't want her to tell Megan that. I'm just trying to figure out how to ease on this. It's a deep wound that needs to heal slowly. If I dump this up now, then, it would crush her."
"I understand that, but if you need time to think about it. I won't push you further." A few minutes of silence followed before Frank spoke again. "I figured you didn't want to tell her as you didn't tell her the real reason why you ended up in the hospital."
"If only she knew... she might hate her more than she ever did back then... one thing for sure is that I will tell her when I'm ready. Right now I ain't."
"I know Jake..." Frank's fist clenched on his lap. Part of him blames himself for not being there, to prevent that accident. But how could he know it would lead to it? Only Jake knew what and how he ended up like this, he wasn't thinking, he just wanted to fix his mistakes.
It was only two days before Megan and Leon's graduation at the police academy when everything changed. He had stopped drinking and was finally collecting his thoughts, unsure if Megan got his letter or if it was too late for them to fix their relationship but he wasn't going to give up. Frank stopped by to check on him like usual. "Hey buddy, why the worried look?"
"I sent a letter to my daughter weeks ago, I don't know if she's got it or not. What if she saw it and threw it away before even reading it? What if she hates me more than ever?"
Frank gently put his hand on his shoulder, giving him a gentle pat. "Easy there, you are overthinking this. You know how much she's been doing to even get there in the first place. I'm sure that busy bee is focused on studying, but I know she got your letter. Give it time."
"You make it sound so easy, but... okay. I just couldn't help myself. They are about to graduate in two days... I want to see them but... what if I ruin things?"
"You ain't gonna ruin anything I'm sure they will be happy that you are there. Trust me."
"You're right Frank, I know how much this means to them. I can't believe they grow up so fast." He held back a choked sob at the thought. "My two precious babies are going to be cops and I ain't missing their graduation for the world. I want to celebrate their accomplishments."
"That's the spirit. I would offer to tag along but work has gotten me busy. So glad you were able to get those days off to see them, otherwise I'd start a riot in your honor."
Jake laughed at his friend's statement. "You are crazy, but thanks. I'll be sure to take many pictures and brag about them at the station."
"You do that, hell I even might treat them for dinner. Speaking of dinner, the boys and I are going out for karaoke tonight. You wanna come join us to ease your worries?"
"Love to, but I'll just take this time to get ready. I want to be there as early as I can."
"Right on then, call me if you need anything. See you soon." He waves and goes to his truck, leaving Jake alone in the house. He clasps his hands and goes to start his journey, grabbing his car keys and making his way over to his car. When he seemed like he got everything he decided to make a quick stop at the station to grab something.
