Megan let out a small groan, "Well whatever reason she had was never a good one... I mean... what kind of mother abandons their husband and child... like we don't even matter."

Grace gently rubs her back to soothe her, "No one knows what was going on inside your mother's head... only herself..."

It made Megan scoff, "Well she can rot for all I care... I hated her the day she left and never came back. She made my father almost drink himself to death... I swore to myself I wouldn't let that happen to him again and make him feel loved... but damn it all. I fucked it all up..."

"Sweetheart don't you say that, you did not screw it all up. You couldn't have predicted what your father would do."

"Still..." a shaken sigh escaped Megan's lips, "I wasn't the best person to him... I tried to make him forget her, but I always feel like I failed him..." Megan gently glanced at her hands, which were intertwined with each other, "You know... I don't think I can stop hating my mom... I know this town isn't exactly huge, but I can still remember the slight rumors people talk about. How my mother left for some reason, my dad wasn't my father, or how she ran off with another man to start a new family. I never paid attention to them because the only person I cared about was my father... no one else..."

"I know I can't tell you what not to feel about your mother... but sometimes... It's better this way, that you can't let that grudge against your mother get to you. Besides, you have your father and Leon with you. You shouldn't worry about your mother anymore. You might not even see her again."

"I know..." she glanced back at Grace, "Honestly... the time I lived with you and Alice before I left for the police academy... You were more of a mother than my own mom was... and I cherish that."

Grace wrapped her arms around Megan and gave her a gentle squeeze, "I cherish it too sweetheart, you're like a second daughter to me..." Grace looked down at Megan, "I knew your mother back when we went to high school, but I honestly didn't get to know her better... I wish I could tell you why she left but... I never got an answer to why either..."

"Do you... Miss my mom?"

"At times... but after I was told that she abandoned you and your father? I just... can't bring myself to forgive her, I thought she was my friend..." She then pulled away to look at Megan, gently brushing her hair to the side, "I wish I had known, if I did then I would've helped your father. I could have but... it was hard dealing with my own set of problems."

"That's okay, I can't really blame you or anything... besides you had your life and my dad has his... but I'm glad that I still got to be friends with Alice, and met you."

"Remember, if you need motherly support. I'm all ears."

"Thanks..."

"Now then, why don't we bake some cookies for when Alice comes home?"

"Sounds like fun..."

Megan got up from the couch and followed Grace to the kitchen to start making the cookies. It felt nice to take her mind off her own mother when she spent time with Grace; it made her feel peaceful. She was kind and caring, always showing Megan the support she needed. So this is what having a mom is like...

An hour went by and the sound of the front door opening caught their attention. Alice was entering the home with a small huff, "Mom, I'm home." She was about to head over to her room when she caught wind of the scent of cookies in the air. She lifted her head to see not only the cookies on the table, but also Megan next to her mother.

"Megan!" She didn't hesitate to rush over and give Megan a tight hug, "I can't believe you're back already." She pulls back to look at her, "It felt like ages, but I'm glad you're here... how are you feeling? Are you doing alright?"
