The silence lingers a moment longer after Megan finished reading the letter. The weight of her late father's words in the letter was enough to spark Leon's determination, "Then that settles it."
"Settles what?"
"That I'm going to Raccoon City. I'm going over there because I can't stand by helplessly waiting for them to call when they probably need me."
"Leon, they would've called you. You can't be serious about this."
"I am, Megan... if I knew anything about living with you and your dad... is that we do what we can to help the people in need, I can't thank him enough for raising me when I was alone. But it's time I do what my parents couldn't... I'm going to Raccoon City."
"But Leon-"
"My mind is made up."
Megan watched Leon walk away from her, her body refusing to move from a state of worry. She can't protect him forever, but she can at least try to reason with him some more.
He paused at the door for a moment, "You will make this town proud Megan, I don't want you to worry about me. I can handle whatever comes my way. You know... You can't protect me forever..."
The words stung her straight to her core, she knows she can't protect Leon forever. He's his own person who can make any decision he wants, it's just the idea of him leaving that somehow struck her nerves more than ever. If they had called him in, would she still react this way? Because it would mean that he's safe from any danger.
The sound of the jeep starting made her body still; she quickly rushed over to his jeep only to see him pulling away from the drive-through.
"Leon wait! Let's talk about this, do you even have a place ready? Where will you stay? You don't even have your stuff ready!"
But those words flew through his ear, with a tearful sigh Leon didn't have the heart to face her. "I'm sorry Megan." He stepped on the gas pedal and drove off, leaving Megan alone outside the empty house they once shared.
"Leon! Leon come back! Don't leave me like this!" However her cries weren't able to reach him, he simply drove off, not even looking back. She couldn't help but stand mindlessly on the street, staring at the jeep that was growing smaller in the distance. Her mind spiraled more with worry and frustration, trying to rationalize his actions for leaving. Could she be overthinking all of this? Maybe Leon knows what he's doing.
Yet the back of her head is screaming at her to chase after him, that he is thinking with his emotions and is just going to get hurt. They could have talked more about this and maybe convinced him to stay. That thought left as she almost said it out loud. She can't force him to stay with her, he had dreams and Raccoon City was somewhere he wanted to be. The thought of it makes her stomach hurt, was it because she was too concerned about him or that deep down she...
"Fuck!" She screamed. Not liking the way all of this is making her feel, she wasn't just going to let Leon leave in this state. She quickly phoned Alice, praying she's not at college right now, "Pick up, pick up, pick up..."
"Hello?"
"Alice... I need a favor, a huge one. Can you pick me up at my house, my car is still at the damn shop."
"I'll be there as quickly as I can." With that, Megan hung up and waited by her front porch. She had to find ways to calm herself down as she waited. Not a moment later Alice pulled up, Megan quickly hopping into the passenger side.
Alice noticed the bothered look in her friend's face, "What's wrong Megan?"
"I need you to take me to Raccoon City, please."
