The dungeons were cold and dimly lit, the faint drip of water echoing through the stone corridors. Rosabelle and Severus walked in tense silence after leaving behind the chaotic scene on the Hogwarts lawn. The tattered book Severus held was gripped so tightly that his knuckles turned white. It was all he had left of what once brought him comfort, and the damage done to it only added to his simmering fury.
When they finally reached a secluded hallway, Severus yanked his arm free from Rosabelle's gentle grip. His face was flushed with humiliation and anger, his eyes blazing. "I didn't need your help back there!" he snapped, his voice rough and trembling. "I can handle them on my own."
Rosabelle stopped abruptly, crossing her arms, her eyes narrowing. "Don't you dare," she said coldly, her voice low but firm. "Don't you dare push me away just because you're hurting, Severus."
Severus' fists clenched around the book, and he turned away from her. "I didn't ask for you to step in," he muttered through gritted teeth. "I don't need your pity or your charity." His voice was laced with bitterness, a defense against the pain he felt.
Rosabelle stepped closer, refusing to back down. "This isn't about pity," she shot back, her tone fierce. "It's about someone caring enough to stand up for you, even when you won't do it for yourself."
Severus whirled on her, his eyes blazing with anger and unshed tears. "You don't understand!" he shouted, his voice cracking. "You have no idea what it's like to be me! To be surrounded by people who hate you, who see you as nothing more than a filthy half-blood. You're always surrounded by friends, Rosabelle. People love you. You wouldn't understand my pain!"
The hallway seemed to echo with his words, his voice bouncing off the cold stone walls. Rosabelle was taken aback for a moment, but then her expression softened. She let out a soft sigh, her arms dropping to her sides. "You're right, Severus," she said quietly, her voice barely above a whisper. "I don't know what it's like to be in your shoes. I've never had to face what you do every day."
For a moment, Severus looked triumphant, thinking he had finally made her see his side. But Rosabelle wasn't finished. She took a step forward, her eyes locked on his. "But that doesn't mean I can't be here for you," she continued, her voice steady. "We've been friends for years now, Severus. Doesn't that mean anything to you?"
Severus' breath hitched, and he looked away, blinking rapidly. The anger that had been fueling him seemed to dissipate, leaving him feeling hollow. "Friends..." he muttered bitterly, almost to himself. "I don't deserve friends."
Rosabelle watched him, her heart aching for the boy who was trying so hard to protect himself behind walls of bitterness and resentment. "Yes, friends," she said, stepping closer, her voice softer now. "You have me... and you have Lily, don't you? We both care about you."
At the mention of Lily, Severus' face contorted with guilt. He let out a shaky breath, his shoulders slumping. "I... I did something terrible to her," he confessed, his voice cracking. "I called her something awful. I... I called her a Mudblood." His eyes were filled with self-loathing as he looked down at the floor. "She'll never forgive me for that. And she shouldn't."
Rosabelle's expression softened further, and she reached out to gently place a hand on his arm. "Then apologize, Severus," she said simply. "It's not too late to make things right. It won't be easy, but it's the only way forward."
