The Hogwarts grounds were bathed in golden light as the students relaxed on the lawn, savoring a rare moment of peace. But under the shade of a distant tree, a different scene was unfolding. Fifteen-year-old Severus Snape was hunched over a well-worn book, his fingers tracing the delicate spine. It was a treasured gift from Rosabelle, the only present he had ever received that was given with genuine affection. He often turned to its pages to find comfort, especially on days like this when the world seemed to be against him.
The laughter of students enjoying their day was a constant hum in the background, but for him, it felt like a taunt.
His peace was shattered by a mocking voice. "Hey, Snivellus!" James Potter called, striding over with a cocky grin. Sirius Black was right beside him, his eyes glinting with mischief. Before Severus could react, James whipped out his wand. "Expelliarmus!"
The book flew from Severus' grasp, landing several feet away. Panic surged through him as he scrambled to retrieve it. But before he could reach it, Sirius seized the book, holding it out of Severus' reach.
"What's this, Snivelly?" Sirius sneered, flipping through the pages. "What could possibly be so fascinating in here that you're ignoring the world around you?"
Severus lunged for the book, fury blazing in his eyes. "Give it back!" he shouted, his voice trembling with a mixture of anger and desperation. But James and Sirius were too quick. James hit him with a Tripping Jinx, sending Severus sprawling to the ground.
As Severus struggled to get back on his feet, Peter Pettigrew waddled over, snatching the book from Sirius' hands. "What's this rubbish anyway?" Peter taunted. With a cruel grin, he tore out a handful of pages, letting them flutter to the ground like wounded birds.
"No!" Severus cried out, rage and pain mingling in his voice. He charged at Peter, but a well-placed spell from James sent him crashing back into the dirt. "Look at him," James laughed, "all worked up over a stupid book."
But Severus wasn't giving up. He staggered to his feet again, his eyes wild with fury. "You bastards," he spat, lunging once more to retrieve the torn pages. But it was three against one, and Sirius quickly had him pinned, shoving him back against the tree.
With a flick of James' wand, Severus was thrown back, suspended mid-air. Laughter erupted from the Marauders as Severus dangled helplessly, his eyes never leaving the book that now lay open on the ground, its pages fluttering in the breeze.
All Severus wanted was to get the book back.
The crowd that had gathered watched with a mix of amusement and discomfort. Sirius Black stood with his wand casually twirling in his fingers, a grin plastered on his face. Remus Lupin stood to the side, his face troubled but remaining silent. Peter Pettigrew snickered gleefully and continued to rip more pages, throwing them into the air like confetti.
As Severus struggled to free himself, Lily Evans broke through the crowd, her green eyes blazing with fury. "Leave him alone, Potter!" she yelled. "Why do you have to torment him like this?"
For a brief, fleeting moment, hope flickered in Severus' eyes. But the humiliation and anger twisted inside him, and he lashed out. "I don't need your help, Mudblood!"
Lily's face fell, hurt flashing across her features, and the crowd gasped. James' expression darkened, and with a flick of his wand, soap bubbles began to froth from Severus' mouth, gagging him. "He makes it so easy to hate him, doesn't he?" James taunted, eyes gleaming with sadistic satisfaction.
Before he could escalate things further, a cold, commanding voice cut through the air. "Enough!"
The crowd parted as Rosabelle stormed into the scene, her eyes ablaze. Without hesitation, she marched up to James. SLAP! The crack of her palm against his cheek echoed, leaving James clutching his face in stunned silence.
Before Sirius could react, Rosabelle whirled around to him. "Think this is funny, Black?" she spat, her voice like ice. Without a second's hesitation, SLAP! Her hand connected with Sirius' face, wiping the grin off his lips.
Her fiery gaze then landed on Peter Pettigrew, who had been snickering moments before. She raised an eyebrow, her voice dripping with mockery. "And you, Wormtail—what's so funny? You can't even cast a proper spell without hiding behind your friends."
Peter's face turned beet red, and he shrank back, looking to James for support. But for once, James was too stunned to intervene.
Turning on her heel, Rosabelle fixed Remus with a glare that was filled with bitter disappointment. "And you, Lupin," she said, her voice quieter but no less intense. "Standing by while your friends act like bullies... I thought you were better than this."
Remus looked down, unable to meet her gaze. Rosabelle's eyes glistened, her fury barely masking the hurt she felt on Severus' behalf.
Turning her attention back to Severus, she waved her wand, gently lowering him from the air. Severus landed unsteadily on his feet, but he didn't pause to acknowledge the crowd or the Marauders. Instead, he dropped to his knees, frantically gathering the scattered pages of his precious book.
Rosabelle watched him, her heart clenching at the sight. Severus' hands shook as he clutched the now-tattered book to his chest, gently patting its torn cover as if trying to soothe it. For a moment, the entire courtyard was silent, the gravity of the scene sinking in.
"Severus..." Rosabelle whispered, stepping closer. She could see the pain in his eyes, the desperation as he tried to piece the book back together. Her own eyes widened as she realized just how much her gift had meant to him.
With a soft sigh, she knelt beside him, helping him collect the torn pages. "We can fix it," she said gently, her voice breaking through his despair. "I promise."
Severus stared at her, his heart swelling with an emotion he couldn't name. She took his hand, and without another word, she led him away from the gathering crowd.
