Seeing Black Dog frozen in shock, a few of his companions curiously leaned over to take a look.

One glance was enough to make them tremble and collapse to the ground uncontrollably.

They tried to get up, but their legs kept shaking.

This was beyond unlucky—collecting protection money only to receive their boss's check...

Howard also wanted to take a look, but Black Dog had already stuffed the check back into Ethan's hands.

"Black Dog, two thousand for protection money is too little for you," Ethan said, stepping forward with a smile as he looked at Black Dog and his crew.

"Take the full million. Consider it a token of our goodwill."

Hearing the check was for a million, the surrounding crowd gasped. No one expected the son of a tea seller to be this wealthy.

Howard was equally stunned. He never imagined his "useless" brother could have so much money. Was the Thompson family that generous to him?

Then excitement filled Howard's face. Black Dog was demanding only two thousand, and Ethan handed over a million—a fool's move, in his view.

Black Dog would surely pocket the entire amount.

"Black Dog, my brother is being so generous. Just give me some face and accept the million," Howard said enthusiastically.

He even glanced at Sophia, thinking how wealthy the Thompson family must be.

In his mind, Howard began dreaming of the day he'd take over the Thompson family's wealth and win Sophia for himself.

While Howard grew more excited, Black Dog remained frozen in place, his mouth dry, struggling to ask, "Who are you?"

"Boss, this is Ethan, my aunt's adopted son," Howard quickly explained. "He's the Thompson family's live-in son-in-law."

Ethan?

Black Dog stiffened as the name registered. This guy's name is Ethan?

The next second, he dropped to his knees with a loud thud.

"Ethan... no, Brother Ethan! We were wrong! Please forgive us!"

Black Dog knelt, repeatedly bowing his head and begging for mercy with tears in his eyes.

Though Victor Blacke had tried to keep the incident involving the Four Seas Chamber of Commerce quiet, key members still knew about that infamous battle.

Ethan had single-handedly defeated dozens.

Victor Blacke had since issued a strict order: no one from the Chamber was to provoke Ethan. Violators would face severe punishment.

The name "Ethan" was etched into the bones of the Chamber's leaders.

When Black Dog realized the person he'd confronted was Ethan, and coupled with the million-dollar check, he immediately understood he was courting death.

"Boss, why are you acting like this?" Ethan said, handing the check back to Black Dog. "Get up and collect your protection fees."

But Black Dog, as if holding something burning, shoved the check back. "I can't take it. I really can't take it..."

"Take it!"

"I can't, I can't!"

The vendors around them were stunned.

It was their first time seeing someone trying to force protection money onto Black Dog, and him refusing as if his life depended on it.

"Brother Ethan, I really can't take it. I was wrong..."
