Aashika sat on the cold, damp ground, her head bowed in despair. The dimly lit jail cell seemed to closing in on her, the air thick with the stench of mold and decay. She had lost all sense of time, the hours blurring together in an endless blur of misery.
Suddenly, a tray of food was pushed through the narrow slot in the cell door. Aashika lifted her head, her eyes listless. She hadn't eaten in hours, but the thought of food was unappealing.
A gruff voice spoke from the other side of the door. "Kha lo, do ghante baad magistrate ke paas jana hai." (Eat, you have to go to the magistrate's office in two hours.)
Aashika's gaze fell on the tray, the food congealed and unappetizing. She shrugged, her shoulders barely rising off the ground. What did it matter? She had lost everything: her freedom, her dignity, her son.
Aashika's eyes dropped, shame and regret washing over her. She knew that she was paying the price for her own mistakes, for the bad karma that had haunted her for so long.
She thought back to the abuses she had suffered at the hands of the man she had chosen to cheat on Rajat with. She had thought that she was in love, that she had found a way out of her unhappy marriage. But instead, she had found herself trapped in a cycle of violence and abuse.
And now, here in this jail cell, she was suffering again. She had taken the blame for a crime she didn't commit, all to save her son from the consequences of her own actions.
Aashika's shoulders shook as she sobbed, the weight of her mistakes crushing her. She knew that she didn't deserve forgiveness, that she had brought this suffering upon herself. But as she sat in the darkness, she couldn't help but hope that someday, somehow, she might find redemption.
As Aashika was led out of her cell, she scanned the crowded hallway, her eyes searching for a familiar face. And then, she saw him - Rajat, standing tall and stoic. Beside him stood a middle-aged man in a crisp suit, who smiled and nodded at Aashika.
"Good morning, Aashika," the man said, his voice warm and reassuring. "I'm your lawyer. Don't worry, we're going to get through this together. We'll prove that you acted in self-defense, and we'll get you out of here."
Aashika's eyes darted to Rajat, who gave her a subtle nod of encouragement. She felt a surge of gratitude towards him, mixed with a deep sadness. She knew she didn't deserve his support, not after everything she had put him through.
The lawyer's words broke into her thoughts, and Aashika turned her attention back to him. "We have a strong case," he continued. "The evidence will show that you were acting to protect yourself. We just need to present it in the right way."
Aashika took a deep breath, feeling a glimmer of hope for the first time in weeks. Maybe, just maybe, she would get a second chance.
Aashika's eyes dropped, shame and gratitude warring within her. Despite everything she had done to hurt him, Rajat was still standing by her, fighting for her freedom. She couldn't understand why he would do such a thing, especially after all the pain she had caused him.
But what she didn't know was that Rajat's motivations weren't entirely selfless. This morning, Kiaan had looked up at him with big, pleading eyes and asked, "Papa, will you bring Mummy home?" And Rajat, unable to resist his son's tears, had promised to do everything in his power to bring Aashika back to them.
For Kiaan's sake, Rajat was willing to put aside his own feelings of anger and betrayal. He knew that his son needed his mother, and he was determined to make that happen, no matter what it took. Little did Aashika know, Rajat's actions were driven by his love for their son, not for her.
