"You were a lawyer before this right?" You questioned, scanning through the files Ginger created.
"Yes, a defense attorney. I tried to defend the wrongfully accused." Higuruma answered.
"I've always thought that seemed like a tough job. As a sorcerer in my position, if I don't like something, I have the power to change it. Take Yuji's execution or the higher ups for example. But as a lawyer, not everything is in your hands like that." You mused.
"No, it isn't." He sighed heavily. "Did you know 99.9 percent of criminal trials in Japan end in a guilty verdict? It isn't right to me, but it seems impossible to fight against."
"So you have a strong sense of justice? Why join the culling games?"
His brows furrowed slightly, "My last client was found guilty, but the evidence didn't support that conclusion. I snapped, and with my technique did an immediate retrial, which ended in the murder of the prosecutor and judge. I was interested in the rules of the culling game, I felt as if people could be properly punished."
You hummed, "That's understandable."
"Yes well...Yuji gave me sanity again. He reminded me of why I began practicing law in the first place when he admitted to a crime he didn't commit."
You laughed, "Yeah, Yuji seems to have that effect. So you became a sorcerer for what? No will to return to lawyering? Just ask Nanamin, there isn't much sunshine and rainbows around here either."
Higuruma shook his head, "I couldn't return even if I wanted to. Actually, there's a case being built against me. I figured if I have this ability I should turn to it."
You placed a paper to the side, in the seat between you both. "I wouldn't worry about it. In return for your work as a sorcerer that record will be wiped, and so will anything else from now on. Be careful though, they might try and hold it over your head."
"Is that how things work around here? Those twenty players I murdered, simply wiped from my record?" He muttered dejectedly.
You handed a page to Ginger, "Not wiped I guess, more like hidden. Probably different than what you were expecting, but nobody will scorn you for that. Its not such a big deal around here."
"I deeply regret what I did. It feels wrong to get off with no hassle, all forgotten." He mumbled.
Glancing towards him the sound of shuffling papers paused, "You seem to be giving yourself enough trouble."
"May I ask you something?"
"Shoot."
"Have you ever killed anyone of your own free will? Besides the battle against Sukuna of course."
You couldn't help barking out a laugh. "I don't know if I should say such incriminating things in front of a lawyer."
"It isn't as if I can do anything about it now." He said dully.
"I've killed alot of people." You replied evenly. "Alot more than twenty."
His eyes widened slightly, "You don't seem to feel negatively about it."
"No, I don't." You looked up in thought, "There were two people, when I was a teenager. As a result of me letting my technique out, a husband killed his wife and then himself. I used to feel guilty about it, but I'm over it now."
"What about the others? What was the situation?"
"Well...you know that ritual? That was the second time that happened, I killed the people that did it the first time. I killed plenty of curse users that tried to collect a bounty on me. I don't even remember most of their faces to be honest. I killed people in the culling game. I killed the former higher ups before the battle with Sukuna. This morning, I killed a curse user that kidnapped three little girls." You glanced up at him, "Given the chance, I'd kill every single one of them again. What do you think? A criminal you'd lock up?"
