Ch1
The young Sargent stood in the main corridor of his base, it had been years since he had last done so, though now the base was far past crowded, there were civilians everywhere and every younger officer that pasted him either gave him a dis-approving glance or quietly commented to their friends about his appearance. He looked himself up and down and noticed for the first time what a state he truly looked, he had not polished or even cleaned his boots for well over a week, his uniform was covered in mud and a thick layer of fine yellow sand, his face was unshaven by at least five or six days and also covered in the same layer of fine sand which he now quickly tried to wipe away as best he could.
He crossed the corridor wile it for a rare moment was free of people to look over his state of dustiness in a glass display cabinet across from him that contained medals and pictures of old Generals, though he payed them no attention. He was shocked to find he looked more like a ghost then a man, and his dark hair was now unseen, just matted together with the same tan mud and dust that covered the rest of him. Glancing up and down the corridor to make sure he was still alone he quickly ran his fingers though it leaving a thin coating of the dust on the freshly washed floor at his feet. He looked up to find himself slightly more of the man he recognized but this was only because his dark eyes could be seen better through his now not so dust covered eyelashes.
'anyway they weren't there, see how good they look after being called right out of action and spending two days on the back of a truck' he thought bitterly as yet another group of young officers past him by with yet more looks of dis-approval.
Traveling the country had become an almost impossible task since the evacuations, if you didn't have or couldn't get hold of the right paper work you were pretty much trapped in the county in witch you lived, but even for people with the correct documents the pace was slow and picket lines took sometimes hours to pass through. Making even leaving your own settled area almost impossible.
He had, had no time to get ready and all he was told was get back to base as soon as possible, he had a new mission one he had to do alone and a new Sargent would be sent to his men within the hour. H was given five minutes before the last truck of the week left the front line and he had to be on it and that was it, no further explanation just report to the Generals office on arrival, so that's just what he did and now he'd been stood waiting for over an hour.
"Lucas Frith" a familiar voice came from behind, so the young Sargent turned and saluted his commander "come in son, so sorry to have kept you all these new survivor's from across the sea really holding things up" He gave a slight gesture of a salute back, then waved Lucas into his office clearly to tired for formalities.
"Of course sir, no problem, just eager to get on with my new mission that's all" Lucas knew very well how his commander felt but he did his best to keep up appearances.
"Well glad to hear it come on in then, oh and hows your father herd he went over last week"
"Fine sir he made it back with nearly all his men"
"Good, good that's what we want to hear"
Lucas was lead into an office he had not stood in for three years since the morning he was put in charge of thirty young men and sent to the front line with no true explanation on want they were fighting for, or what in fact they were fighting, he was simply told 'just the same as all other wars someone wants something that doesn't belong to them, and people must be protected'.
The room had changed very little in those few years still the same colour of pale green on the walls, one wall covered in old books, a glass chest of his and his families medals and nearly every inch of the upper walls covered in pictures of the men and women he had either fought with or trained. Lucas could see that the only real difference was the pictures of the four children on the walls behind the desk they had been updated as the children in them got older, though now the oldest a girl was not shown.
