Ch 31

When Lucas came to he couldn't tell whether his eyes were still closed or if he had in fact opened them.

Lucas could hear nothing but a faint drip of water or at least what he hoped was water and the smell of rot and mold hung heavy in the still stale air.

Lucas pushed him self up to sitting, but as his head had begun to throb like a pneumatic drill, so he wished he'd stayed put, but the stone floor was cold and wet. Lucas was sure if he could see the room in which he was being kept it would be spinning so apart for the worry of what had happened to Alan and where exactly he was being kept he thought it best to do nothing but stay put, at lest for as long as he could.

Just how long Lucas sat there for he couldn't tell and just how long he had been locked up for he didn't want to know, if it had been more then a few days his flickering hope of getting back to Lyn would begin to go out, like a match running out of wood to burn. Either way it felt almost a life time since he had said a quick goodbye to Lyn and even worse as he now thought back made no attempt to say anything to their growing baby.

Then footsteps and voices grew slowly louder, but from exactly where he could not entirely make out and how many he was also unsure, but as they were getting louder, so he suspected that there was no other path they followed then the one that lead them to him or worse, Alan.

His suspensions were confirmed as the heavy door that blocked the world and its light from him was wrenched open and the heat of his cell was introduced to the cold of what lay outside.

Lucas kept his eyes shut for a moment as the cold fresh air entered his lungs and gave some relief to his situation. He slowly opened his eyes to a blinding yellow light from the corridor on the other side of the door, but he couldn't stop himself from screwing his eyes shut again and turning his head away. When he could finally open them once again he could see the room which he was being held in for the first time. It was no bigger then the bed rooms of the bunkers he had spent so much time in, but at least in those rooms there was light and the woman he loved.

This room was not concrete like the bunkers it was built from stones half the size of the cars they drove from bunker to bunker, but the the floor was concrete.

Over him stood two men, both silhouetted by the light from outside so no real detail of their faces could be seen, but Lucas was sure one if not both carried the rose patch upon there breast. Even when one crouched next to him breathing heavy down his neck his face was still lost in the darkness, all but for a pointed noise skirted by a thick mustache.

"Now that your awake, you have a few questions to answer" his voice was harsh and he sounded as if he a run a great distance or the more likely from what Lucas could smell, he was a heavy smoker. Cigarettes were something else the corporations and armed forces had at there disposal.

"What about?" Lucas tried to sound equally as harsh, but his wounded head got the better of him and his voice came through as nothing more then weak.

"I think you know"

"Do I?"

"Don't play stupid with me, unless your life isn't that important to you" the rancid smell of stale spittle and cigarettes engulfed Lucas, causing him to retch, and he only just stopped himself from actually being sick all over the men boots.

"I'm saying nothing"

"Is that to say that you feel you can't say anything, at the risk of your fellow officer, because Lyn might kill him and come after you, because we have the means of protecting you and freeing him of her, if you just tell us where she is keeping him. Or is it because your in league with her?"

"I said, I'm saying nothing, so-"

Lucas was cut short as the man that still stood over him punched him hard in the face sending a river of blood streaming from his nose. The worm metallic liquid flowed into his mouth and over his lips turning what was a slight sickness from his head wound, and the stench of the man in charge, into complete nausea to which took all his control not to retch again.

"You will tell me all I need to know about her, you both will" the lead man took over once again,

"Alan, where is he? What have you done with him, he's nothing to do with this"

"Whether he is or not you both will have information about her that may be valuable to me, even if it simply where you two came across each other, that will at least give us somewhere to start our search for Lyn. Anyway I'd worry far more about yourself from now on as clearly your mind has been swayed by her influence, but I am sure we can correct that. We also have some files we'd like you and your friend to take a look at and I am sure you both will be able to fill in the blanks"

"And if I refuse?"

"We kill you both and wait. It wont be long until she shows up looking for you and by that time we will be ready and waiting"

"No you leave her and my-" again Lucas was cut short, but this time it was the other mans boot that came to meat his ribs with a sharp crack that pushed all the air our from his lungs. This time though the sudden attack came at the perfect point, any later and Lucas knew he would a just willing told them about his baby.

"Oh don't tell me you have fallen for a computer, because in the end that's all she is, and what pray tell do you want me to leave alone, her and your what?"

"Sir, if I may" for the first time the other of the two spoke, it was now clear he was far younger then the man at the side of Lucas.

"Go on then spit it out"

"It sounds like he and her have well, you know"

"Why yes I believe I do, and since you have been with her no more then a few months it seems the pitter, patter of tiny little computer cables is and up and coming event"

"No, No stay away-" this time it was the back of the mans hand at his side that struck his face hard enough to knock him completely to the floor.

"Unless you are telling me the information I want to hear its best to keep that shut, I'll be seeing you tomorrow and for your sake I'd have a lot more to say then you have today"

He now stood and began to speak to his younger companion "It seems as if Tom fulfilled his mission even if he is now dead, he would have earned himself a meddle for this, inform the corporation he worked for, I may be happy enough to comply with the commander sent by Henry, but I will get all I can out of this deal and if it means getting that from two rather then just one corporation, so be it.

"I want Lyn's pregnancy kept between you and me until the other commander arrives, and then he must be told he is here for some other matter to do with the recovery of Ash. Henry can have her back and they can take the baby once its here. Bring him and the other man to the storage unit tomorrow and from now on until we have all that we need, there's far more room and light in there and the rest of the base wont be able to eves drop"

"Yes sir"

These were the last words either spoke, as they both then left closing the door and leaving Lucas once again in the dark. Now his worries were greater then how long he had been there and the whereabouts of Alan, now he hoped it had been more then a few days and that Lyn wound do as she said, take both Tom and Ash and leave. That way they wouldn't hurt her any more then they already had, or give her back to Henry and take their child.

A life never seeing her again or their child was a far better outcome, then what would happen if she came for them. And his death, well that was even better, that way he would never have to wonder every day exactly where they were, and if they were okay.
