Ch 18
"Can we talk?" Lucas had just walked into the kitchen, to happily find Alan sat alone at the table.
"Of course son, how can I help?" Alan didn't lift his head from one of the Laptops he was trying to up grade, so it would work at the same speed as Lyn.
Alan had brought four with him, apart from his little back palm sized one, which he would let no one, but Lyn touch, and that was only due to the fact he found it hard to say no to her.
"Fixing another one up?" Lucas pointed at the Laptop, as he sat in the chair at Alan's side.
"Yes, what do you need?"
"Some answers, about Lyn, about why her, why would you do this to her?"
For the first time, Alan looked up from the screen, and though Lucas had looked away he could feel Alan's pale green eyes piercing right into the side of his head.
"There's a lot to tell, would you like to be more specific?"
"That device Lyn found out about, how you kept her here, and that there would have been nineteen others, but things happened and she was the only one left, she told me about Mat, that he wasn't meant to become like her. She told me what she could, what she got from downloading her memory on to Ash's computer, but that was before you came, so now you can tell me, right?"
"So you know the device was implanted at birth and that...."
"I was on the list, like many others born to soon or to late, and that;s when my story ends. but this device, what I don't understand is how it kept Lyn here and not the others"
"Well....well the device was designed to create a needed to never leave the country, but as I am sure you can tell it didn't work as well as we would have liked, the problem is technology moves so fast at first they were the best design, but once the candidates became eighteen and the device was switched on nearly twenty years had gone by, and we found they weren't so reliable. I spoke to Henry many time about changing them, but cost was more of his concern, so the original implants stayed put, eventually leaving Lyn the only candidate left"
"Why didn't they work from birth? And what made Lyn stay, and no one else"
"Before the age of eighteen you belong virtually to your parents, if they left the country it would look a bit odd if say, their three year old refused to leave with them, so we made it the age of adulthood, meaning if they chose not to follow their family, then it was easier excepted. Some as you know died, but then because the device didn't work properly, free will to easily took it hold, so if they wanted to go they did. Why Lyn stayed I can't say, her device was no stronger then the others, but maybe it wasn't just the need to stay from it, but also from inside, someone, something"
"Maybe me, which brings me to wonder, did you know about us? we went to school together, how we felt, anything?"
At this question Alan looked back to his Laptop, it was clear to Lucas he wouldn't get an answer and if he did it wouldn't be the truth. Lucas knew now Alan had some part to pay in his assignment to Lyn but he couldn't push him what if some how he was just as badly hurt inside as Lyn? No he would just have to wait until Alan trusted him as Lyn now did, that was the only way he'd get the truth about anything he needed to know.
As Lucas stood a noise he had hoped he had escaped crashed it way through the bunker corridors. There was no mistake, it was nothing other then a bomb something he had herd nearly everyday for three years, he cared little what Alan would think to his reaction.
Alan had stood looking around him for the source or for any damage, but to his shock on looking back round Lucas seemed to no longer be in the kitchen though he knew he had not left. Then without warning, one of the chairs shot from under the table and toppled to its side leaving a space where Lucas crawled out and flew out of the room.
