Ch 34
The night was cold, but for once in the past few weeks, there was little if any wind.
Lyn and Tom had left Ash alone in a new bunker over an hour ago, he was clearly worried, but she didn't let him dwell on it, saying they would all need feeding when they returned so it was finally his turn to make them tea. Tom had tried not to laugh, but whether it was because he actually found the thought of Ash actually cooking funny, or he was just trying to help take their minds, especially his own off of what needed to be done and just what might happen she didn't know, and didn't really care. It made both men smile and that was all that mattered.
Lyn didn't take much of the bunker in, she was just happy it didn't stink as lifeless as many of the bunkers they had been in had. The only real time Lyn took to go over anything, was to make careful note of the bunkers location, making sure Tom especially could find the way back if they were for any reason separated. Then they left.
Lyn and Tom spoke little after she explained to him were Lucas and Alan would be being kept and exactly what he was meant to be there for, she had pulled out a map on there arrival and showed him where to go to get what he needed, saying that under no circumstances was he to deviate from his part of the plan.
Lyn had only shown Tom briefly were she would be going, but refused to give him long enough to examine that part of the map, or to answer any questions.
Tom understood by now not to ask just how she got hold of a map that had not been one of the many Alan and Lucas had gone over, and Tom wasn't sure if he wanted to know how exactly she knew so much about the base, or the people running it.
"You sure Ash will be okay?" Tom spoke for the first time since they left the cars over ten minutes ago "And just why did we need to park quite so far away?" Tom hoped she answered, he couldn't stand the silence anymore and stupid questions were all he could think to ask.
Lyn stopped at the edge of the trees now that lay between her and the wire fence was four foot of open space covered in gravel "He'll be fine, he's three hours away and that's on two good feet just stop thinking about him and get your mind on what you need to do, I don't want to have to go back in there for you" she pointed at the base. "And you will see soon enough just why the cars need to be so far away"
"What now then?"
Lyn examined her watch, though Tom knew it was only for his benefit, as a computer would have its own internal clock "Thirty seconds" He didn't say anything about that fact.
"For what?" Lyn didn't answer his question, but then suddenly she shot from the tree line "Lyn wait" he quickly followed.
"Shh" Lyn turned and pressed her finger against Tom's lips and pointed to the guards in the closest watch tower. Tom followed it with his eyes, the two guards that were up on look out had shouldered their weapons and were preparing for their decent back to the ground "One minute, that's all we have, keep next to the fence until you see the building your looking for, they wont notice you wile they get ready for the night, be careful, keep a look out, and don't stop unless you have to. Then once you have what you need get out I'll see you with both of them back at the cars"
Tom nodded and hoped he took in all of what she said. After all it was the quickest he'd ever herd her speak. They both watched as the two solders started to climbed down their ladder, and Lyn raised her hand to the fence.
"What if its charged?" Tom raised his hand to stop Lyn, but didn't put a finger on her before she spoke.
"Well don't you touch it until I've done then" Lyn held her hand to the fence palm no more then a centimeter away. And Tom let his arm fall back to his side, wondering just why he ever tried to think of Lyn as a real person.
