Ch38

Lucas sat alone at the kitchen table nursing a cup of tea Lyn had made for him over a half hour ago before she went to bed, he had spent little time alone in this kitchen in the five days they had spent in the new bunker, but again it to seemed to have been taken over by some of the left trying to start a new home.

The bunker itself was bigger then the last they had escaped from, but it was clear that far less time had gone between the last inhibitors leaving and the five of them arriving.

There was no smell of damp and very little dust covered the surfaces. Very little in the bunker needed going through and cleaning out, nothing had been put away into cupboards before the left had gone, where ever they moved onto, though it was clear they wouldn't be back, nothing that showed that real everyday life still resided down there was anywhere to be found.

Lucas liked it more then the other bunkers, but he wasn't sure if it was because it was the most like a real home he'd seen in over six years, or if it was because even though it had only been five days Lyn felt safe there, even with how close they were to 'The Rose Building' that either she or Alan felt comfortable being until the bomb was ready.

Lucas had noticed over the past few days that Lyn had become almost obsessed with making the bunker as much of the perfect home as she could possibly manage, Tom had warned him not to try and stop her, Lyn had chosen that was the place were the baby would be born and now she was simply nesting, so he'd just have to live with it.

Lucas found it hard to believe there was little time left before the his baby would really be there, he had spent most of the time not knowing, in Lyn's bad books and the past month moving nearly the full length of Britain, even though they had two Land Rovers it was still a nightmare getting up the country undetected, everywhere the left were was safe, but most of the land was covered in the armed forces looking for Ash, and him. At least they were believed to be the only ones still alive and with Lyn. Pickets had now been doubled, and he could only imagine what it must be like now word would have been spread of his rescue, only made worse by the fact it was Lyn who did the rescuing. He only hoped only Henry truly knew she had destroyed the army base, but he knew it was nothing more then hope. There was no way any corporation involved would believe two men that had been captured and beaten for days had vaporized the whole place.

"Hay its Christmas, cheer up" it was Tom's voice he herd beside him, he was holding a cardboard box that was obviously heavier then he wished to let on.

Lucas knew Tom would want to talk, but he hoped he'd just leave the box and go.

The past few days since Lyn had reminded them it was nearly Christmas had been infuriating, it wasn't that he hated Christmas, in fact he loved it, or at least the Christmas's he could remember from before the war.

What bothered him most this year was not the fact that once again another year would go by with it not being celebrated, but more the fact Lyn insisted that they have Christmas.

Lucas assumed it was one of the many things Alan had re-taught her and because she couldn't remember it, she simply wanted to make a real memory of her own. Lucas just couldn't see how she was meant to make it right if she had nothing to go on, and hated the thought of it upsetting her more then making her happy.

"Hay are you okay?"

And there it was, Tom wouldn't leave now without the truth. Tom dropped the box with a hard thud to the table sending cold tea sloping over the sides of his mug, and sat in the chair next to Lucas.
