Ch 9
"Hay you coming?" Lucas poked his head through Lyn's open bedroom door, she was sat on the bed, legs crossed, reading a book she had found in one of the store rooms. One she said she either had never read, couldn't remember reading or was never give to read by her creator.
"Where?" she didn't look up, just carried on reading. Her one word responses had now often started to annoy him, there was no real explanation, question or real want to know behind them.
"Its Tom's birthday today, Ash's got some vodka he stole from some of the survivor's on base"
"Nice"
"I know" Lucas smiled thinking she happy about the idea.
Lyn looked up face blank "No I meant isn't it a bit mean, you know drinking something that may have been one of the few things some one had left, even if saving something like that probably means they have problems worse ten even mine" Lyn then kept reading on.
"Oh Lyn, stop it" Lucas couldn't stand any more, he stepped in and took hold of Lyn's hand making her drop the book which fell to the bed and pulled her to standing so he could look down into her dark eyes.
"Come on, please, its his birthday, and its not like he can have a big party, he'll notice if your not there. Please, for me, you've been in here all day, the book wont miss you"
"Give me a few minutes then" a delighted grin spread across Lucas's face that he was happy to see finally got a slight smile from Lyn. "How old?"
"Twenty five, why?"
"You'll see, meet in the kitchen right?"
"Ya" and with that she pushed Lucas out and closed the door leaving him alone in the corridor. Lucas thought over what Lyn had just said as he walked back to the kitchen, it wasn't as if she could just quickly run out to the corner shop and grab a card and a little present for him, so what was she doing?
Lyn had insisted on leaving for a new bunker the day after they had seen what they now all believed was Henry's new army. It had to be one not so close to any roads on the map Lucas had in his pack, and they had all without argument agreed. It simply wasn't worth the risk. It had taken nearly a day and the passing of two other bunkers before she had decided they would be safe and well out of reach, which at least he was happy about.
Ash wasn't quite sure, but whether that from simply wanting to go against Lyn or because he would be harder to find, Lucas was still unsure. It wasn't just that though which was bothering him about Ash it was also his never ending picking at what Lyn had become at no ones fault but Henry's, that resulted in her wanting nothing more then to be alone.
So now when Lyn wasn't searching through the store rooms for anything useful, she stayed shut up in her room reading the books she found. which she had been doing for the past two days.
Lucas walked though the kitchen door to find Ash in hysterical laughter over a joke Tom clearly didn't find in any way funny, Lucas was sure it was something about Lyn and he would never get in on it, but if it was about Lyn he didn't want to.
Lucas sat next to Tom refusing to acknowledge Ash's attempts to piss him off and hoped Lyn would hurry up. Over the past few days Lyn had developed an uncanny way of putting Ash in his place when she did happen to show herself, he acted like it meant nothing, but it was all to clear it did. He often tried to say something just as hurtful back, but it never worked and if she had nothing to say back she'd just ignored him which he seemed to hate even more. Lucas put it down to the fact she could never remember being picked on and teased as everyone gets as a child, so to her it was easy to brush off, it was far from important in her mind, so why should it hurt. There was also the fact Ash had nothing he could hurt her with, digs about her life before the war may have been thrown at a brick wall, she had no idea what he was trying to get at, so didn't understand why it should bother her, and she found little upsetting that involved the past six years and if something did start to find her cracks she easily shut him up.
