Ch 22

Lucas could hardly breath as he ran from the kitchen, his legs were so heavy, that it seemed the faster he tried to run, the slower he went. Lucas could hear Tom calling, Alan and trying to console him, but there was no reply to his words. There was nothing more Lucas wanted, then to have Lyn back, so he couldn't loose her, so now no matter what it took, her and their baby would have to make it, or neither would he.

They came to Lyn's bedroom, to find Alan waiting in the doorway. Lucas tried to run in, but Tom and Alan both stopped him. Alan stood strong in the door way and though Lucas could easily see over his head, the one area that his eyes needed to get to was blocked from his vision.

"NO" and the doctor was back, Tom was no ones friend and definitely no ones family, now he had a job, and he would do what it took to complete it. "Let me see her first, you'll get in the way and I need to work as fast as possible" then Tom and Alan raced into her room and closed the door behind them.

Lucas though he tried could only make out whispered, concerned voices, but no words were clear from inside the room, and worst of all, there was no noise from Lyn. Lucas would have even been happy to hear her scream, or even start to cry, because hearing nothing made the possibility of death all that more real.

His perfect morning had been turned inside out right into his worst nightmare, he had to get in that room, had to get next to Lyn, no matter what the outcome.

Tom was yet again right, he had taken far to long in sorting out what was more important to him, and now he may never be able to make it right. Lyn had to know how he felt, the whole truth that he loved her, and how sorry he was for hurting her, when all he ever wanted to do was keep her safe, if he never had smothered her, she would have been there as soon as she got sick and would never have done what it took to damage her brake so badly.

No matter how much he'd love to blame Ash for giving her the whole bottle of tablets, and for not keeping a closer eye on her it was clear to Lucas that just like her leaving this to was his own doing, nothing would make him think otherwise.

The door opened and he spun round to find Tom covered in blood, Lucas had to remind himself to breath, though it was the most painful breath he could ever remember.

"She's alive, but I need you to move her to the kitchen wile me and Alan get washed up, there's not enough light in here and that rib needs me to do my best, don't worry about the tube in her chest, its just to drain fluid, she can breath better now, and I checked, your babies just fine, for now at least"

Tom then solemnly walked off towards the bathroom to clean up and Alan walked through the door holding Lyn in his arms. Lucas took her and let Alan follow Tom down the hall.

Lucas looked down at Lyn, but unlike any other time, she couldn't lay her head on his shoulder, she simply lay in his arms limp and he could feel just how cold her skin had become. If he hadn't known better he would have sworn she was dead.

Lucas carried her to the kitchen trying to hold back the tears that stung his eyes and listened hard for any sign of life from her, a noise or even the smallest breath sound but all he could hear was his own boots as he walked and the drip of the fluid coming from the tube inside Lyn's chest.

There was no bag attached to the tubes end as there was none in the box that Alan had to run back to the kitchen and get from Ash who he then sat just outside the kitchen door in case they had to use the table.

Lucas hardly noticed the noise of his boots and the drip after a few steps as his heart got louder as if some how it was getting closer to his head reminding him how bad things were at that moment in time loudly shouting that his was there and beating and would stay that way, but Lyn's was faint and may soon even stop. It wouldn't let him forget it not even for a moment was he aloud to think she wasn't fully human anymore so there was a greater chance she would pull through. He looked down at Lyn once again the brighter lights of the corridor showed how truly pale, she had become since he left earlier that day, plus now her lips were tinged and gray, blue, her side was now covered in blood that he didn't notice until then was running down his shirt, making him look as if the pain in his chest had begun to bleed through his skin for all eyes to see just how much this was killing him. Her chest barely moved with the slight breaths she was taking that though she wasn't awake, he could tell were starting to cause grate pain as the sleeping tablets started to were off.
