Chapter Ten

They awoke to the sound of a piercing scream in the middle of the night.

      The voice belonged to Freya.

Everyone jumped up at the sound of the scream.  Within seconds they all stood outside the tent, coming face to face with a young man of about seventeen.  He held a bawling Freya in his arms, seeming annoyed at her struggle.

He was not wearing much armor, but he had two swords strapped to his back and no doubt more weapons concealed in the folds of his clothing.  His hair was a dirty blonde and it was almost down to his shoulders, messy and strewn everywhere.  His eyes were a cold icy blue.

“Be quiet girl,” the man said, sounding almost bored.

“LET ME GO!!!” Freya yelled, struggling in the arms of her captor.  She felt helpless, and hated the feeling.  She wished she could do something and not always have to rely on others to save her and do all the work.

You are only a burden, a voice inside her head told her, making her feel even worse.

“I should have stood watch!” Jean growled.

“I truly didn't see this coming,” Karaugh said angrily, massaging her temples, muttering under her breath.

“This is war, expect the unexpected,” the man said emotionlessly.

“That’s cheating!” Joshua yelled, surprising himself with his sudden outburst.

“Anything is allowed in war... and in love,” the man stated.

“Bastard,” Truman said, unsheathing his sword.

“If you try and attack me, you might harm her,” the man pointed out.  “Sorry kid, there’s a lot of gold on your pretty little head, and I really need that money,” he told Freya.

“Now will you behave like a good prisoner and let me kidnap you?”

Freya was still crying and struggling in the man’s arms.

“I’ll be off then, sorry for my intrusion,” he said before letting out a long, high-pitched whistle.

There was the sound of wings and then what looked like a horse dropped out of the sky.

      It had wings.

“Damn,” Markl blinked at the beast, wondering if he was imagining things.

The man jumped onto the beast’s back and in a flurry of feathers they had taken off.

Markl and Joshua stared in astonishment at where the beast had been just moments before.

      “W-was that-” Markl stammered.

“Looked like something from Greek mythology... ” Joshua said in astonishment, pausing to rub his eyes.  “Am I hallucinating?” he thought out loud.

“If you are, then so am I,” Markl deadpanned.

“That was real,” Karaugh said, suddenly appearing behind the boys in her strange way, seeming to be one place, but being somewhere else.

Joshua and Markl jumped from the suddenness of the answer.  He spun around and was almost relieved to see it was Karaugh.

Joshua was too busy thinking of a way to help Freya to turn around, sinking back into his thoughts.
