Chapter Nineteen

      “Oi-” a voice called.  “Oi!”

“Five more minutes-” Perdita grumbled, pushing a hand away.

“Hmmm-?  Are you saying you want to stay like this for a little longer?” the voice asked.  “Not that I have anything against this though.”

Perdita rubbed the sleep from her eyes, seeing Areli's face hovering above hers.

It was his face, but his eyes were different.  They were a deep blue, and there was a mischievous glint in them.

They were sitting on a bench near the statues Perdita had fallen asleep between, Areli holding Perdita on his lap.

She had been wondering for a while why it was so warm, and now she knew why.  She was being held close.  A little too close for her liking.

“Ah- ah- ah- y-y-y-y-you... ” Perdita stammered, her face flushing.  “Seaweed Head!!!!!” she yelled, slapping him hard across the face.  “I thought you were the kind of person who was friendly and quiet!  You suck!  You're the worst Areli!” Perdita said, shrinking back, only meeting warm arms.

Then, Areli did something, very un-Areli-like.  He grinned broadly.

      “I'm not Areli,” he said.

“Then who are you?” Perdita asked through gritted teeth, a you-are-so-dead smile on her face.

“Jakko van Vin de Litena,” he said.  “Also known as Jak,” he added.

“Why the ruddy hell am I on your lap?!” Perdita said a little too loudly.

“You're so uncute when you speak like that,” Jakko frowned.  “I found you and it was cold outside, so be glad you're on my lap and not stuck between some creepy looking statues.”

“Y-you found my hiding place!” Perdita gasped.  “I fail-” she sighed, covering her mouth with her hands.

Jakko smiled.  “Well,” the Areli look alike said.  “Do you believe me not being Areli?” he asked, his blue eyes gleaming with amusement.

“K-kinda....  I mean, Areli has red eyes!” Perdita exclaimed.

“Glad you noticed.  I like you, you notice more than usual people do.”

“H-huh?” Perdita blinked, a light pink dusting her cheeks, but hard to see in the dark.  “Y-you what?”

“And since I like you, I'll let you in on a little secret,” Jakko said.

“W-what kind of secret?” Perdita asked, raising an eyebrow.

“Somebody isn't happy about your discovery in the basement,” Jakko said.  “So, make sure you're careful, all right? I'd hate to see you get harmed.”

      “W-who?” Perdita asked.

“Can't tell you that much, or it'd ruin my fun,” Jakko said, standing up.  He still held Perdita in his arms, and showed no sign of wanting to put her down any time soon.

“Well then, it's dangerous for me to stay any longer,” Jakko said.  “So I'll make my leave.  Give my regards to Areli for me,” he added, setting her down on the bench, ruffling her hair.

“And give him this letter,” he added, pulling out an envelope from his pocket, setting it down on her lap.  “Now I'll not loiter any longer since I'm not welcome here.  You better be off to your room too, it's past midnight you know.  My, what would the teachers say, if they knew a young girl like you was out so late with a guy,” Jakko teased.
