Chapter Forty-Six
“Where am I?” Perdita asked the darkness. Her head hurt from memories that were not hers, from dreams too good to be real, from nightmares so terrible she could not distinguish them from reality.
“The netherworld,” a nostalgic voice called back.
“Who’re you?” Perdita called back, spinning circles but seeing nothing.
“Ah, the more important question here would be, who are you Perdita?” the voice laughed.
“I asked first!” Perdita yelled. “Show yourself!”
“Oh, I am, you’re not seeing, because, you see, how can you see the world when you can’t see yourself?”
“I am me!” Perdita said defiantly.
“Well what is your name?” the voice mocked.
After a long silence, the voice laughed. “See, now how about you use those memories I gave you back? Think, what is your name? See-“
She was standing it that sunny place, two faces staring at her. They were blurry, but she could see their mouths clearly.
“Hey, what’s wrong-?” the world went silent when they spoke what she assumed to be her name.
“-?” the boys called again.
She concentrated, trying to read their lips.
There was an O, definitely an O.
O?
An M? An N?
Aaron? “No,” she thought. “That’s a boy’s name....”
Shannon? She felt like she was getting close. With each letter she read from their lips, the stronger she felt, the less fuzzy the memories--she suspected them to be her original memories--became.
“Sharon!” Perdita yelled, her voice piercing through the darkness, loud and clear. “My name is Sharon Ranetta!”
The voice cackled. “I’m impressed Sharon, that was faster than I expected, but it’s not like I am in a hurry, in fact, we have all the time in the world....”
“What do you mean?” Sharon asked, looking around as the darkness faded away, leaving her in a swirling white mist, standing in front of a plain table. He mist was clearing more and more with every passing moment, and soon she could make out a figure sitting at the other side of the table.
“Well Sharon, you said you want to know who I am,” the person said, the mist finally clearing completely, leaving her in a small room with no doors or windows, the walls painted white and nothing but the table, two chairs, the stranger and her in it.
“I’m Link, the link between all, present, past and future. I know everything and everyone, but not many know me Sharon,” the person--a young man--said. “But you already know me, believe it or not.”
His hair was pure black, his eyes a deep violet and his skin browned by the sun. Just above his right eyebrow he had a little crescent shaped scar. His long black curls were tied back with a blood red ribbon, his attire very old fashioned to Sharon.
“Why don’t many know you?” Sharon asked.
“Because they have neither the potential, or are in a position I can use them, or rather, I know what you’re capable of,” Link said, folding his gloved hands. “And I sort of owe you, but all in due time.”
“Oh and do take a seat Sharon,” he added with a nod and a smile.
Sharon nodded and carefully sat down, staring Link straight in the eyes.
“Sharon, there’s something I wish for you to do for me,” Link said once she was seated.
“What would that be, Link?” Sharon asked.
“I want you to make sure Alice won’t steal any more names, it’s very troublesome to have those capable of seeing me loose so much, but I was lucky with you. Alice has gotten lazy and sloppy with confidence, so your memories were not as far gone as she would have wanted them. I want you to help take care of Alice.”
“Like killing?” Sharon gulped.
Link smirked. “You’ll have to find that answer yourself Sharon. There’s somebody waiting for you....”
“Areli and Jakko?” Sharon asked.
“That’s not who he is Sharon, I’m sure you’ll live up to my expectations, so do yourself a favor and keep asking questions, I’ll be there to help when you need it. In fact I already am, you just have to look harder.”
“I feel like I’ve met you before,” Sharon said.
“You have, you just don’t know it... yet,” he smiled, “Well, now you do know you’ve met me,” he laughed. “Now go Sharon,” Link stood up to pat her head. “And I regret I can’t give you any hints, but I believe you’ll meet me again soon.”
“How do I get out of here?” Sharon asked.
“Close your eyes and think of he room you were in, listen for the voices calling you,” Link smiled.
Sharon nodded, almost able to feel somebody shaking her.
“Perdita! Perdita!” a faint voice called.
When Sharon opened her eyes she was looking up at Areli’s worried expression.
“Who’s calling me Perdita?” Sharon asked.
“What did you remember?” Jakko asked. “Tell me that name triggered something... maybe we’re in luck,” he smirked.
“My name,” Sharon said.
“Tell me so we can address you properly,” Areli said, pushing a strand of her hair from her face.
She was lying on the couch, Areli and Jakko on either side of her.
“Sharon. My name is Sharon. And I remember everything.”
THE END
