Chapter Twenty-Three
“Don’t push!” Perdita complained from the space behind a cabinet she and Areli had somehow managed to squeeze themselves.
“Hey, you wanted to hide back here!” Areli muttered.
“Just until we’re sure nobody is here!” Perdita argued. “Now be quiet for a moment.”
“You’re the one making all the noise!” Areli pointed out.
“I- er... fine! Let’s just get lunch!” Perdita said, somehow managing to get out of their hiding place.
Areli sighed and slunk out behind her. “I believe the fridge is over there,” he said, pointing to a metal door; the entrance of the walk in refrigerator.
“Uwaaaaah!” Perdita smiled, seeming to float over to the door. She hurried to unlatch it and tossed the door open, stumbling inside. “Look at all the food!” she exclaimed, her eyes wide with wonder.
Areli chuckled and watched her rush back and forth between the shelves. She was gathering things in her arms, and having trouble carrying her load.
“Need help?” Areli asked, walking over to her and taking some of her load from her, noticing that she only had fruit and vegetables.
“Are you going to be able to eat all of this?” Areli asked.
“O’course not!” Perdita exclaimed. “I’ve got some for you too!”
“But it’s all fruit and stuff....” Areli pointed out.
“Because I’m gonna make salad, and I love fruit!” Perdita almost yelled. “You can’t say you don’t love fruit and vegetables!”
“Isn’t it unusual to like things like that?” Areli questioned.
“I grew up in the country... I think, and that’s what we grew and ate! How can I not like it?”
“I guess that makes sense....” Areli sighed.
“Let’s find a stove!” Perdita smiled, spinning around happily.
Areli froze for a moment, not sure what she wanted the stove for, but shrugged and gestured towards it with a jerk of his neck.
“Yay! Yay!” Perdita smiled, running over to the stove and dumping her armful of food on the counter. She rolled up the sleeves of her sweater and sighed. “What to make with all of this...?” she sighed.
Areli had the strange feeling that Perdita had no idea what she was doing, but he decided to ignore it for the time being, that was, until she began making him nervous.
Perdita was humming cheerfully and grabbed a rather large bowl, placing it next to the nearby sink.
She began washing the fruit and vegetables, placing the clean things into the bowl.
“Mean bowl is too small!” Perdita whined.
“But that “mean bowl” of yours is quite big... ” Areli said. He did have a point, seeing the bowl was more bucket sized than bowl sized.
“Then... then... I need a basket!” Perdita announced.
“There should be some around here- somewhere... ” Areli trailed off.
“Would you go get one then? A biiiiiiiig one!” Perdita said, waving her arms around to make a point.
“All right,” Areli smiled, taking a step but hesitating a moment. “Perdita?” he asked, looking over his shoulder.
