Chapter Forty-Four
“Here we are,” Mastiff said, leading Saubre inside, followed by Lycurgus, who was carrying the Mai Shashi.
“Set her down there,” Mastiff waved Lycurgus to a table in the center of the room, not a proper medical table, but one with water stains (most likely from one of the empty mugs on Mastiff’s desk) and looking quite wobbly.
“Is that safe?” the Mai Shashi asked skeptically, not sliding from Lycurgus’ back.
“Yeah, it’s fine, I take naps on it all the time, and I surely weight more than you,” Mastiff laughed, washing his hands in a little sink past his desk.
“Just sit down, let me check your leg!” Mastiff frowned, rolling back the sleeves of his white coat and lifting a black bag from the floor.
The Mai Shashi sat down, closely watching Mastiff, who waved Lycurgus aside, setting the bag down on a chair he pulled up with his foot.
“All right, let’s see what we got!” Mastiff nodded, instructing the Mai Shashi to raise her injured right knee so he could take her foot in his hand.
She did so, flinching a little, as it was sore and stiff.
Mastiff fingered around the wound, frowning. “Doesn’t look too good,” he muttered under his breath.
“Where’s my pager?” he grumbled, digging around in his pocket and pulling out a little black box, pushing on a hidden button, adjusting the small earpiece one would never had noticed unless he had either told you or readjusted it like he was doing now.
“Hello, Dr. Mastiff speaking,” Mastiff said. “I’m gonna need some strong coffee after this,” he said to the air.
“What?” Lycurgus asked, ignoring Saubre’s questions.
“What did you expect? I don’t want to pass out in a moment, do you want me to? Lyccy, Lyccy, you have much to learn still, you are about a hundred years too early to try and figure me out!” he laughed.
“Are you saying that... you didn’t, did you?” Lycurgus’ eyes widened. “I’m impressed,” he said, crossing his arms.
Mastiff laughed, just as a pretty, young woman with long blond hair walked in, wearing a white coat, almost identical to Mastiff’s. She had a tray with more than a few mugs of coffee on it.
“Ya-ho!” the woman called, pausing a moment to rub her eyes before staring at Lycurgus.
“Do I know you?” the woman asked, looking like she would put her hands on her hips in a defiant manner if her hands were free.
“No,” Lycurgus said. “Who are you?” he asked.
“I’m Reina, Mastiff’s secretary,” the woman smiled. “I’d shake your hand if my hands weren’t full.”
“Oh, and was that cute little girl you brought in your daughter?” Reina asked. “Saw her a few rooms down with a nurse, I really wanted to take her with me,” Reina almost sang.
“No, just a girl I picked up on the street,” Lycurgus muttered.
“He’s not much of a flirt, more like a pedophile!” the Mai Shashi teased, earning nasty glances from both Saubre and Lycurgus.
