The rest of the day, Nolan and I engross ourselves in each other's company, but it wasn't what I have thought it would be.
"He can't separate us." I said, shocked at his father's threat. We were still in the kitchen; Nolan sitting on the stole while I stood in between his legs. "Besides, didn't you told me that your parents are getting a divorce. You shouldn't care if he disown you."
"And I don't. I also don't care about his stupid threat to me. What I do care is about you. I'm not going to let him hurt you."
Silent remain for the both of us.
"You know, I though I had my future planned out." He said. I watched him be lost in his thoughts. "For my entire life, my dreams were to go to UPenn. Go to the school my father and his generation went to. Because I wanted to be just like my father. .. But now? Now .. I don't have a clue anymore."
"Don't say that. Every one has a a back-up. What was your other go-to if UPenn wasn't going to happen?" I asked.
Nolan remained silent, still lost in his thoughts. As I wait and wait ... and wait, nothing came out of him. I can sense that he had something by the way his eyes land onto mine, but quickly dismissed it as I watch him shake his head as he gently push me away so he can get off the stool.
"I don't know." He said, walking out of the kitchen. Well, that was the only time we had an actual conversation for the rest of the day. The rest were either one word or gestures. Nolan left with a simple kiss of goodbye, leaving me to wonder what he was going on in that mind of his when I asked about his back-up. Did he know what he wanted to do if he didn't get accepted? Was he scared .. or embarrassed to tell me? As I thought over on Nolan's weird behavior, something he said popped into my mind and get me really focus on it.
Mr. Phillips is coming after me.
***************
It's a new week. Another week to go by, but this time, it would be different from last week. Yeah .. for me, it's not like that. The reason: Nolan didn't show up to school. For three days already. And it's like I'm back to where I was before. I've talked to his teachers .. I wouldn't have if he would pick up the many voicemail I've left him. The teachers told me that he had an emergency ... a family emergency. Hearing that got me worried. Did something happened? Is it his father?
The bell rang, dismissing school for the day. Walking out of the building, I stare down at my phone, praying to see Nolan's caller ID to pop out. Me, staring down, restricts me from seeing forward and causes me to bump into someone.
"Whoa, baby. Be careful."
I look up, immediately. Nolan stands with his hands in his pocket. "Nolan?" I should be jumping for joy, seeing that he's okay, but curiosity eats me alive, wanting to know why he's been gone and why he didn't answer my calls. "Where have you been?"
"I'm so sorry, Scottie." He takes couple of steps towards, grabbing both sides of my face, so he could kiss me gently on the lips. "I didn't mean for you to get worried. Neil was having a very awful flu, so I took care of him. He's still sick actually, but I just had to come here and see you."
"What about my calls? You never answered."
"I threw my phone to the wall."
"Why? What happened?" Nolan didn't answer my question. Instead, he leads me the way to his car. "Uhm, Noel?"
"Yeah?"
"I brought my car with me."
"Oh, okay. Can you meet me at my house? Please?" He stops us in our tracks.
