I walk into the room as if nothing happened, but Aaliyah knew something was wrong. When I walked over to the bed where she and the kids were, all she could do was stare and study my face.
"Colin, what's wrong?" I turn my attention to bubba who's sitting on her lap carefully holding Aalijah, with Aaliyah's help.
"Bubba, you holding brother like a big boy. You know since you're older you gotta be his protector, right?"
He nods his head. "Keep him away from monsters."
Me, aaliyah and anyone else who's standing around the bed laughs.
"That's right, keep him away from the monsters...and you." I say pointing to Riley. "You gotta protect your brothers, even when they grow up and may get bigger and taller than you, you still find ways to protect your brothers."
"I know daddy. Mommy told me I should protect them from girls."
"Oh really?"
"Yeah, she said I'd do a great job of scaring them off. Just like how you do a good job of scaring off boys." I laugh.
"Mommy would tell you that."
"Of course. Gotta keep the birds away from my boys, because they're anything like their papa, that's all they will attract."
"I attracted you didn't I."
"First off, I attracted you!" She says putting emphasis on "I". "Not the other way around...I wanted nothing to do with you, remember."
"Yeaaaa, I remember." I say thinking back to the days where she rejected me a few times before she finally agreed to let me take her to the movies and out to eat.
"Exactly. And besides, even if I was attracted to you back then, I'm not like them birds, am I?"
"No, you're not."
"Exactly. So hush."
"Yes ma'am."
Soon, after everyone leaves, Aalijah went to the nursery for the night and Riley and Nate are asleep. I'm in bed cuddled next to Aaliyah watching tv.
"So you gonna tell me what went on earlier?" I turn to look at her and she's looking up at me.
"Ricardo had came up here; I'm guessing to see the baby and I told his ass to leave."
"And did he...or did you make him."
"Does it really matter? He's not here. Also, when the nurse called me outside, he asked to be swabbed and left it with the nurses. I gave them permission to swab Aalijah when he got taken back to the nursery, so we should know something soon."
"He's yours Colin."
"I believe you, but I want that nigga out of the mix, so I'm willing to give him what he wants. My name is going on the birth certificate regardless. I'm not waiting for DNA results."
"Okay." She says quietly.
************************
Days later, we get the results of the DNA test and Aalijah is mine. After he was born, I honestly had no doubt in my mind he was mine, and the test on proved that I was right; well Aaliyah was right, and I should have known better than to question her, rather than trust her. Aalijah is mine.
