The city was being destroyed by the Chitauri and I felt like I couldn't do anything. I could hear my coworker whimper in fear as the creatures entered the store. I covered her mouth when I hear the step get closer to the counter we were hiding under.
I carefully reached over for the broken broom in front of us and quickly bring it back close to me, tensing when I hear the soft growls of the creatures right above our hiding stop. Quietly taking deep breaths, I spring up and hit the Chitauri as hard I could.
Surely, I was putting up a battle for it, seeing as how it stumbled back every time it took a blow. That or I was fortunately greeted with one of the weaker counterparts of the army. I was praying in my head that it was the first choice.
I kept kicking and punching as hard as I could, and I actually felt confident that I could defeat this monster. Well, that was until three more appeared from behind him. I could feel the blood drain for my face.
"Holy crappola... Could use a bit of help here, (coworker's name)!" I mentally screamed at her when I was only met with harsh whimpers and yelps. So useless...
The four were backing me up into a corner, growling menacingly and pointing their scepter-like weapons at me. I attempted to hit them again with the broom. Much to my demise, the Chitauri caught it and crushed it in its grip.
I hopelessly stared the the broken piece of wood in my hand. Well, this is how I was going to die. In the hands of some evil space creatures. I growled lightly in frustration, throwing the stick at their heads and putting my fists up in a defensive position. Might as well fight back while I still have the chance.
Suddenly, a gunshot rang out, and another one, and another one... I jumped when one of the bullets landed on a spot near my head, making a small hole in the wall.
I finally looked up to see a woman with astounding features. She had beautiful short, curled red hair and shining blue-green eyes. I guess she felt someone staring at her when he turned her gun over to me.
"Oh, you're a civilian..." The woman put her gun into its holster, a wave of relief immediately washed over me. "Why aren't you taking cover?" I sighed, brushing off the dust off me and walking behind the counter.
"We didn't get a chance to." I saw her quirk up an eyebrow in confusion, probably not understanding what I meant by 'we.' I quickly pulled (coworker's name) out of her hiding pace and pointed to her. She nodded.
"Besides, I'm a New Yorker. I'm not going to let these things take my home. They'll be sure that I won't give up without a fight." I could see her smile a little, resting her hands on her hips.
"Well then," She looked at me up and down, as if she were studying me, scanning me. "Miss (Name). Stay safe and if you die, walk it off." I rolled my eyes slightly, dragging a half-conscious (coworker's name) behind me.
I realized the woman knew my name even though she didn't ask. I quickly turned my head back. "Wait, how did you know my-" But I was met with nothing. "name?"
I sighed slightly, dragging her to a safe place without distractions. I left the building and looked around the destroyed city, sighing. Well, I promised I wouldn't go down without a fight.
"What did I tell you about getting somewhere safe?" I jumped slightly when I heard her voice again. I shrugged sheepishly.
"Hey, Romanoff! It's nice that you're making friends, but you may want to prepare yourself. 'Cause I'm bringing the party to you." A voice came from her earpiece, one that I could barely understand. One that strangely sounded like Tony Stark, the Iron Man.
I take a look around me again, only to realize that I was surrounded by four more people. Four males, one dressed in a patriotic suit, a man in a black-purple suit, a muscular male with a familiar hammer, and one angry Hulk.
"The Avengers...." I softly mumbled to myself. I quickly realized that the woman beside me is the one and only. "So, you're the famous 'Black Widow?'" Natasha raised an eyebrow at me, her expression practically saying, 'I'm surprised that you've just now noticed.'
"Well, since you're joining us -seeing you're pretty calm in this situation- Here, heads up." Hawkeye tossed me a gun from one of his holsters.
The weapon clicked and I took a deep breath, trying to calm my nerves. Captain nodded at me slightly, trying to make the best of the situation. Thor swung his arms in circles with the hammer.
"Do not worry. This shall be an easy task and we-"
"Sorry to interrupt, but remember what I said about bringing the party to you?" I heard the voice again. I could see a very large mechanism that was chasing a suit of golden red armor; Iron Man.
"I-I don't see how that's a party..." I mentally snickered a little when Natasha mumbled that out loud.
"This'll be fun." She smirked a little, reaching for her gun and readying. Captain America pulled out his shield, Thor tossed Mjölnir lightly into the air, Clint prepped his bow and arrows, and Hulk roared loudly and menacingly at the mechanism approaching us.
I smiled slightly at Natasha one last time before going into battle. It was time to finally fight back.
