I walk down the hall and hear the door to the meeting room open after I had closed it behind me. Probably just someone else leaving, wanting to go home from this business trip.
"Now, gorgeous, aren't you a feisty one?" I hear a familiar voice say as a pair of arms pin me against the wall. I am faced with Mr. Garrison staring at me angrily with his arms holding me against the wall.
"Get off me creep." I spit in an annoyed and almost bored tone.
"I know that marriage between you and Shane is fake. But tell me, why is he doing it? Is he doing it so that he can touch you? Or so that he can make other men jealous? Why?" He questions me eagerly.
"He's doing it because he cares about me, like any other marriage. Now, if you don't mind, I have other plans. So, I must be going." I say as I push Mr. Garrison off me and I trudge my way down the hall towards Shane's office.I make it inside and I lock the door behind me. I take a seat in Shane's fluffy chair and lean back to relax. How did he known it was fake? I feel like Shane and I do a pretty good job of showing "public affection" when needed and I've hidden Jack from everyone. People around here still think his name is Sean.
"Hey. What happened? Johnny told me he saw you in trouble." Shane says as he storms inside the room and almost dashes towards the desk.
"I'm fine, guys were just being stupid." I mumble.
"It was Harley wasn't it? Did he hurt you? I swear, if he did anything to you..." Shane grumbles as he spins around on his heal and begins walking back towards the door.
"No! Shane, it wasn't him." I say, sitting up in the chair to see him better.
"Then who was it? What did they do? I can have any of them executed at my order. None of them are allowed to hurt you and they need to know that. I'll go put the fear of God in them, they'll never touch you again!" Shane shouts as he pounds his fist onto his desk in anger.
"What's up with you? I said I'm fine..." I say as I lean on the desk to get a better look of him.
"Garrison just pissed me off. He's always been trying to take my place because he's leader of District 1. So, if something happens to me, he would be next in line. But, now that you're going to be my wife, it will all pass to you when I die. Then, it will go to your child, Marisa and so on. But Garrison is just pissed because he won't ever get my power. Then he brought up my brother and then you and... It just made me mad." Shane admits as he runs his fingers through his hair.
"I didn't know that... I didn't know that you set it up that way." I say as I watch as he slowly calms himself down.
"Yeah, I made sure that you would be okay even if I pass. In my will it states that you will become the new leader and then movers will take all of Jack's belongings to the mansion. Then everything will be yours and you can get married to Jack easily." Shane says, sounding almost out of breath. My eyes widen and I tilt my head in slight confusion.
"Why would you do all that? Just for me...?" I question him in shock. Shane shrugs and paces around the office.
"I do care about you, even if it isn't romantic. I want to make sure that the people I care about are okay and will be okay for as long ad I'm able." Shane explains with a small smile. He walks around the desk and grabs a paper that had been lying in front of me.
"But, if you don't mind, I have more work for today." Shane says, his eyes suddenly locking with mine.
"I actually wanted to talk to you about a few things." I say, standing from his chair because I think he wants it back. I suppose he's still not used to me being around him and using his stuff.
"Oh, go ahead." Shane says kindly, putting his hand on his desk and leaning on it casually.
"Why did you make all those plans for Jack without telling me? I mean, it was sweet, but I don't understand why you didn't tell me." I explain, crossing my arms over my chest.
"I just wanted to help, I thought that was what you wanted. I thought that you and him had plans to get married do I thought it would fit. I just thought that was what you wanted." Shane explains, his eyes staying locked on mine the whole time.
"Yeah, but I would've likes to know about it. So, please just tell me when you make important plans like this. Also, I would like you to tell me why you didn't tell me that Carter was your brother!" I say in a more angered tone this time. I think this one made me the most mad. Shane sighs heavily and shakes his head.
"I never chose my family, I never wanted to have a kidnapper for a brother, okay? The reason I didn't tell you was because it wouldn't have helped anything. It would have just made you mad, like it has now. And from what you said during the meeting, I think you can relate. Can we please just jot talk about him? It obviously upsets you and I want to forget about him. Also, I thought you'd realize when I called him brother, or when I was upset about banishing him." Shane explains, still in an all business tone.
"I thought you were upset because he was a close business partner or something. I didn't realize he was actual family." I say in a slight shameful voice. I do know what he is talking about, being ashamed of your family. I have been running away from my past from the beginning, after all, it isn't the best story so far. I have voices in my head and my mother knew that. Maybe it was right of her to send me to the hospital. But I may never know, Jack was saving me even then. He always has saved me, from others and from myself.
"Yeah, I know. I shouldn't have said anything about it, I'm sorry. Let's just agree to keep the last behind us, I think we both have things we'd rather keep out of mind." Shane says, resting a hand on my shoulder in a caring way.
"Yeah, okay. I'm sorry I brought it up." I say, shaking my head to get all the thoughts out of mg head.
"It's okay, I promise from now on I'll tell you everything. It will make everything between us a lot easier if we're not hiding things." Shane declares as he leans and kisses my forehead.
"Yeah, that makes sense." I say in a hushed voice as I space out and just stare past him as my thoughts begin to consume me.
"Is there anything else you wanted to talk about?" Shane asks me kindly. I shake my head and bring my eyes to meet his gaze once more.
"Actually... I should probably tell you something before I go... The man that I snapped on, Mr. Garrison, he told me that he knows our marriage is fake. I don't know what evidence he has, but I wouldn't take it lightly... After all, he knew my last name, and that's hard to find." I explain, bringing myself back to reality and staring into Shane's eyes. He feeds me a confuses look and then it fades to shock.
"I'll take care of it, but did he do anything to you? Something that we can use against him maybe? I've been trying to get him out of office for quite a while you see." Shane says as his eyes trail over my face, searching for something, but I don't know what.
"He just pinned me to the wall and asked me why you were marrying me. Then I pushed him off me and walked here. I don't think that's enough to get him kicked out of office, but it's a start for a case." I say, optimistically. Shane nods,
"Very true, I'll just look for something else. Anyways, if you don't have anything else, I really do have work to do. Especially because now I have to schedule things in District 4... They don't have very good signal." Shane explains with a nod.
"Got it. I'll be at Jack's the rest of today, but I'll probably go home tomorrow. I want to give him some space and see you before our wedding." I explain with a soft smile.
"Alright, I think I'll be on a more normal schedule tomorrow and I'm off on the wedding day and three days afterwards. I just have a lot of work today because all the leaders are here. They like to pile their work on me so that they can go and take a break, but most of them leave tomorrow so we should be okay." Shane explains with a light shrug of his shoulders.
"I'm sure we will be, you always do a good job of that." I reply. Shane nods and hugs me lightly.
"I'll see you later. Do little talk with the leaders, I don't want them to bother you or try to use you to hurt us. So, please, just go strait to Jack's and stay there, I trust he will protect you." Shane whispers over my head while we hug.
"Okay, I'll stay there." I respond in a whisper.
