~*3 Days Until The Wedding*~
I wake up to the sound of a knock at the door, just like a pounding in my head. Jack jumps out of bed and dashes towards the front door.
"Hey Shane..." Jack says in a tired and slightly nervous tone. I sit up strait in bed and push all the blankets off me as I get out of the bed.
"Yeah, that's my codename I guess." Jack says with a laugh that sounds nervous. I start towards the front door, I don't want Shane to get mad at Jack. I see Jack standing in front of the door with his wrist lazily leaning against the doorframe.
"Morning Shane, I didn't expect to see you this early." I say as I duck under Jack's arm to face Shane better.
"Oh, yeah, I'm sorry if I woke you." Shane apologizes in a sincere tone, but it just sounds like his normal business one.
"It's fine, I don't want to sleep all day anyways... So, what do you need? Or, wait. Do you want me home?" I question casually, leaning on the opposite doorframe than Jack.
"I was just making sure I understood your message. You can be out all day if you wish, I'll be in the office late again tonight. Feel free to stay at anyone's home tonight, just don't go up the mansion steps without help. It is quite a climb and I don't want you doing it alone." Shane declares sternly with a small nod as if he was approving his own statement.
"Okay, also, do I need to do anymore of the wedding stuff? Because I want to make sure it's all done by today." I explain.
"It's all done, I've handled all the paperwork and we both have our outfits saved. Oh, Jack, have you and the other guys gotten your suits or do you need more money? I can write a check now if you need it, I have one in my pocket." Shane explains, moving his eyes to meet Jack's in a polite manner.
"No, what you gave us is more than enough. Thanks a lot, but we already bought them." Jack says with a smile and a nod.
"Good, I'm glad I could help." Shane says with a nod and glancing at me. "But, Violet, I have a meeting at 1 and I would like you to be present for it. I'll be hosting it and it's going to about the status of the districts. I feel like you could have good imput and a lot of important men will be there. It could make them see your strength like you wanted. Please consider it, my assistant, Elise, will let you in." Shane explains, his eyes intently staring into mine.
"Okay. I'll be there. And I'll probably stay here or at my old house with the guys. Is there anything else?" I question him politely in a tone that I think resembles Shane's business tone. I suppose I hear it a lot, so I could be just repeating what I'm used to.
"Not from my side. Oh, actually, thank you Jack, for looking after her yesterday. I also wanted to ask something of you, but I must ask that it be in private." Shane says, glancing at me. I nod and walk past Jack so I can let them have their 'private conversation'. It's probably Shane telling him that it's okay to love me or something of that nature.A few minutes later Jack comes into the living room where I sit. He sits next to me with a look of shock on his face.
"What'd he say?" I question curiously, leaning back on the couch casually.
"He... Asked me to be... His best man..." Jack says in a shocked tone, glancing up from the floor to meet my gaze in the middle. I give him a confused look and tilt my head just to try to understand why he'd do that.
"I didn't ask him to do that I swear. He is doing this on his own." I explain, putting my hands up as if a way to show my innocence in this situation.
"I know... He told me that too... But his reason was because..." Jack trails off and turns away from me.
"Because what?" I question curiously.
"Because he thinks I should be the one who's the groom. He wants me to be closest to that position so that I can see what I'm waiting for. He said that he made me an extra copy of the wedding ring so it can be just like we're married..." Jack says with shock still in his voice. I blink a few times to let the information set in. I can't believe it. I think I've been judging Shane all wrong the whole time. He really does understand me, which is even weirder to think about.
"Why would he do that...?" I question in a mumble, more to myself than Jack. He seems just as shocked as me in this situation, which is interesting. Jack has never seemed like the type of person who gets confused and upset easily.
"He said that he already told the planner I was to be the best man, so it didn't really matter what my answer was. Shane is a good guy, and I want to tell you... There is no one I would trust more than someone like him to take care of you and Marisa. I'm glad you chose him, he's a good person." Jack says as he turns his head to stare in my eyes while he speaks.
"That was my thinking too..." I respond in a whisper.
"He also said that he has a service ready to take all my stuff to the mansion. That he just has to give the word and I live there." Jack says, keeping his gaze with me the entire time.
"That's nice of him, I didn't know about that either..." I say, trailing off into my thoughts. I wonder what other things he may have planned that I don't know about. I also want to know why Shane made all these detailed plans for the wedding without my knowledge. Was all this in the fine print on one of the documents he had me sign? Did I just not notice it because I was tired or not paying attention? I may not know right now, but I'll be sure to ask him before the actual wedding day.
"Yeah, I figured that you didn't..." Jack replies as he crosses his arms casually. I cross my arms and turn so I sit towards the window. I stare outside and suddenly I hear a bump of thunder shoot through the sky and lightning hit far away from here. I can't help but laugh lightly at the occurrence outside.
"What's so funny?" Jack questions me with a chuckle.
"It just reminds me..." I turn to face him. "Of the day we met... Just sitting on the couch watching the rain." I add, staring into his sky blue eyes, remembering when I first saw them. Jack sighs happily and moves closer to me, wrapjng his arm around me just as he did that day.
"A lot happened since then... But it is crazy to see how far we've come... When it began you were trapped, and now we're sitting in a compound to be safe from zombies. I gotta admit, I didn't expect that, but I'm glad we could do all of it together." Jack whispers as we both lean onto one another and stare out the window to watch the rain fall from the sky and nourish the Earth.
"You're still just as sweet as when I met you..." I mumble happily.
