My Ring

I glance at my window that is cracked open at the moment. Dim sunlight shines almost directly in my eye. I guess I've stayed awake even longer than I wanted to. First it began with my thoughts overwhelming me so I couldn't fall asleep. Then it was that I just wasn't comfortable in my bed and I started rolling around in annoyance. Now it appears that both made it so that I couldn't sleep at all last night and now I'm even more exhausted. I sigh and sit up in my bed as I shove the blankets off me. I let my feet hang off my bed for a moment before I finally stand on the cold tile. I yawn heavily and stretch my arms above my head as much as I can, I'm not as flexible as I used to be. I take in a deep breath as I start towards my door and open it in one movement. I poke my head out, no one is out there right now. Good. That will make this a lot easier then. I close my door once again and grab a box that sits in the corner of my room. I open all my dressers that have clothes and other daily items and throw them all into the box. I then see a bright yellow shirt sitting in the box, I guess I had thrown it in there.

"That's so ugly..." I mumble as I pick it up and hold it up, just to examine it better. It has ruffles around the neck which just makes the shirt look stupider. I throw it back into my dresser in an annoyed way.

"I guess that's it." I sigh the words from my mouth. I pick up the box and open my door, walking outside of it. I then go towards my front door and struggle to open it, but eventually I do. Then I pick the box back up and start to go outside, but something stops me in my tracks.

"Leaving already?" Jack says just before I close the front door and go on my way. I turn around to face him and drop the box completely.

"I was planning on giving one of you guys the house. I won't need it anymore. You were probably the top choice for it, but I know the others don't have one so if they want it, they can have it." I say. I reach in the back pocket of my jeans and pull out the key to my home. "Here." I say as I toss it towards Jack.

"What happened last night? You and Mark make up and then you leave before he wakes up? It seems pretty suspicious if I had to say anything. Especially because now you're just giving away your house. What happened?" Jack asks me curiously with his fingers playing with the key on the counter.

"I just... I don't want to make anyone mad again and I need to move my stuff anyways. Shane is probably waiting for me, so I should go and-"

"No he's not. I heard what you told Mark, that this isn't a real marriage between you two. I also heard you tell him that you're going to have a boyfriend on the side. Or did you want to keep that part from me because I'm not going to be that man? I've told you before, and I'll tell you again, I won't get mad if you don't choose me. But before you go, c'mere for a sec, I have something for you." Jack says as his hands start to dig in his pockets. I approach the counter slowly and stand on the other side of it.

"What is it?" I question, watching his every move carefully. I see the same black box he had proposed to me with in his hand and he puts it on the counter. He then opens the box and pulls out the ring that had been inside and puts it in front of me.

"For you. Take it." He says with a sweet smile on his face. My jaw stays dropped as I stare down at the ring that lies by my fingertips.

"Jack... I can't take this from you. You'll find someone else you deserves it more than me." I say, not even daring to touch it in fear that if I do, I might not let go. I won't let go of the memories Jack and I shared and I won't be able to move on from him like he should move on from me.
