Call me Jammy (not my real name). This happened when I and my mom visited one of the rural areas in Visayas exactly 5 years ago from this day. I was 17 then, and first time ko pumunta sa probinsya, sa bukid na parang malayo sa sibilisasyon. My mom's father was very ill so she decided to bring me with her sa hometown nya so that my grandfather would be able to take a glimpse of me before he dies. My father didn't want me to come because of personal issues, I don't want to disclose but I felt sorry for my grandfather so I agreed to accompany my mom.
Upon arriving there, I was greeted by my cousins and aunts (Who of course I met for the first time) and my, my they loved to see me. After the formalities, I went to see my grandfather and checked on him. 3 days later, he died.
Just 2 days after his death, grandfather was buried, as per his instructions. During the burial, there was this man who kept looking at me. I wasn't sure if it was me at first but I confirmed it when I started to walk around and his gaze was still locked on me. He was definitely not my type so it was uncomfortably annoying.
Turns out he was their neighbor's son. He was apparently invited together with his father for dinner that night after the burial. By the way, he kept on glancing at me like a total weirdo the whole dinner.
After the meal, he stayed at the sala while his father was talking to my uncle. I wanted to stay at the living room too but since that creep was there, I went upstairs to my room.
After all that, a lot has happened but this certain night is what I'll never forget.
The room I and my mom slept in was big but on that night, I was left alone in that room (Mom went somewhere and it was pouring a lot outside so they were stranded obviously). The only people left in the house was me, and 3 of my cousins. Around 9 pm we were playing board games in my room when we heard creaking floorboards just outside my room. It's not yet raining that time so we could clearly hear the approaching creaks.
Aya (my cousin) said, (translated in tagalog) ""Hala, ano yun""?
Mae (aya's sister) replied, ""Tignan ko muna"" so she left my bed and ran to the door. She looked at the small hallway and said, ""Wala naman"".
Aya: Hala ka, baka si lolo yun!
Tinawanan na lang namin yun and continued playing monopoly. By 11 pm, we decided to call it quits and decided to sleep. My other cousin, Sid asked me if i'm okay with sleeping alone because if not, they will sleep in my room. I told them I'm fine so they left.
Around 1 am, I suddenly woke up for no apparent reason. Nakatagilid ako facing left and reached for my phone.
Being the eldest among us, kinuha ni Sid yung walis saka tumakbo sa kwarto ko. Pero walang tao. Di na namin chineck thoroughly tapos pinatulog na lang ako nila sa kwarto nila.
The next day, 6 am nung nagising ako, andyan na sila ni mama. She was sleeping at our room. When I looked at the cabinet, I saw a part of one of my hanged clothes stuck between the cabinet's twin doors.
My cousins and my aunt rushed in and saw what seems to be their neighbor's son.
My uncle was furious as hell and told his wife to fetch Nong Tony, their neighbor. Barangay tanods were called in and the incident was reported to the local police.
After telling the police about what happened, including the man standing at the foot of my bed, the culprit admitted to breaking inside the house through the unlocked backdoor. Nothing was taken from our stuff so the police suspected that his 'agenda' of breaking in was me.
I am just thankful to God for letting me wake up just at the right moment. So girls, lesson is, please lock your doors.
