Lightening cracked, echoing across the sky outside. Evangeline sat under the sheets of the bed quietly reading a book that Marcel had lent her when it happened. The sound had caused her to jump in surprise, dropping the small book into her lap. Evangeline pulled back the covers and walked to the window, spotting the rain pouring down heavily as if the sky was having an emotional breakdown. There were absolutely no guards standing outside due to the rain, and Evangeline realized that tonight could be the night she had been waiting for.
For the last week of being held prisoner in the compound, Evangeline had watched Marcel and his men. She knew how they acted, where they would always be, and each one's weaknesses. While it had been raining on and off since the day she had been captured, earlier this morning being the worst of all, which was why, that night would be the perfect time to escape. With the storm, which was only worsening by the hour, everyone would be so busy trying to stay dry, that no one would notice she was gone, and when they did, there would be too much rain and lightening to go out and search for her. It was the perfect plan.
It was mid afternoon now and she knew Ethan would be up in a few minutes to bring her a meal. Once he did, she would feed, getting her strength back and then she would flee from the window. In the time being, she began to pack up her things, making sure to quickly grab her journal from underneath the mattress along with her wallet and other personal items. Evangeline went into one of her dresser drawers and found the stash of blood bags that she had been collecting over the last week. She had only been taking small portions from them, trying to keep up just enough strength so that she would be able to bring extras with her when she did escape. Evangeline didn't know how long she would be outside, so she grabbed a rain jacket from the closet full of clothes Marcel had bought for her, along with a pullover which she shoved into the remainder of her backpack. Placing the bag in the corner of the room, hidden behind the curtains on the window, she crawled back into bed to read, hoping that she looked just as normal as she always did.
When Ethan arrived with a blood bag, she politely thanked him, sucking down half of it, and feeling her body liven again. Even half was more than she had drank in the last few days, so it was enough to bring up her strength. She put the rest of the bag with the others in her backpack and quickly slung it over her back. Walking over to the door, she gently placed her ear against it, listening for anyone nearby. When she met silence, she quietly opened it and saw that the hallway was empty. Closing the door again, she made her way over to the window. Placing her palms on the glass, she hummed a spell, feeling her hands begin to heat up and melt through the window pane. Once she had burned a solid hole through the glass, just big enough for her to step through, she pulled on her hood, and prepped to leave. Rain splattered through the hole and onto the carpet as more thunder cracked outside. Evangeline stood on her tippy toes and in one push, she jumped from the window and fell all the way down onto the concrete sidewalk below. She made the jump easily, helped by the fact that she was a vampire. Pausing to look around and make sure no one saw her escape, Evangeline soon bolted, running down the street as the rain pelted against her jacket. Her breath was heavy after a few blocks and her heart was racing. She wiped droplets of water off her face as her legs pumped hard, taking her farther and farther away from her prison. After what felt like a hour, she knew she was far enough away from the compound that she could stop. She had already made it across the river, and she knew the darker the sky got, the less time she had to find a place to hide for the night. If Marcel sent vampires out looking for her, it would be the night walkers, those with daylight rings would be nestled safely inside of the compound.
Evangeline walked quietly down the street before her, at the very end spotting a small motel with a neon red sign that flashed the word 'open'. She jogged quickly to the door, taking a glance back behind her one last time. The street was deserted, and there wasn't a soul in sight. Not even her vampire hearing could catch any sign of life. Grasping the cold metal hand of the motel door, she pulled it open and stepped into a vintage looking lobby. The carpet belong her feet was covered in brown felt and at an old mahogany desk stood an older woman with graying hair. She appeared to be knitting, and her blue eyes flicked up to look at Evangeline as she entered. When the old woman saw the young girl, she immediately stood up and quickly walked around the desk to greet her.
"Dear child, what on earth are you doing out there in that rain?"
"I was just trying to find my hotel." Evangeline lied. "I was visiting a friend in the city and I got stuck in the storm on my way back. Silly me thought I could return to my room before it began to rain."
"Could I get you a room here for the night?"
"Oh, I couldn't possibly stay here." She shook her head, placing a look of fake sadness on her face. "I have no money. I guess I'll just have to wait until the rain calms before I head out again."
Knowing that she was playing with the old woman's heart strings, she sighed, rubbing her arm as she began to shiver.
"Oh, please. Don't fret, child. I will let you stay in one of my rooms for free. Don't worry about a payment."
"Are you sure?" Evangeline asked hopefully, trying to feign innocence.
"Of course!" The old woman smiled, walking over and placing her hand on Evangeline's shoulder. "Come with me and I'll get you settled in right now."

Evangeline was sitting atop an old bed, unzipping her backpack as the rain pelted against the glass window. She had already settled into the room the old woman gave her, which smelled of smoke and old lady perfume, before settling into bed and hoping to wait out the dark until Marcel's men could no longer leave the confines of the compound. She knew he would never risk the night walkers lives during the day, keeping them inside just in case even a small ray of sun shone through the clouds.
Evangeline began to unpack her bag, grabbing the other half of the blood bag and beginning to sip on it as she pulled out her journal soon after. As the irony liquid slid down her throat, she could feel her strength returning. Evangeline grasped the key on the small string from her neck and pulled it over her head. The small metal piece was golden, glistening under the soft light of the lamp on the nightstand and in the shape of an intricate heart. The key itself was a locket, one that opened up to fit into the lock of the journal. Inside, was a small picture of her mother holding Evangeline as a baby.
Evangeline unclipped the locket, and slowly placed it inside the heart lock, the metal perfectly aligning. She pressed down, the small mechanisms inside of the book moving and allowing the lock to open. Evangeline quickly unbound the wrapping of the journal and opened up the first page.
