A large pounding upon the motel door caused Evangeline to awake with a start. Confused for a moment about where she was, she sat up, steadying the journal upon her lap as her ears recognized two voices from the other side of the door.

"Evangeline! Open up! Marcel knows you're in here!" Ethan yelled, sending another hard knock upon the door causing it to shudder at the impact.

"You can't run anymore, girl!" Travis growled, giving the door three more harsh pounds. "He has witches that will always find you!"

Evangeline quickly slid out of bed, not even bothering to make it. Quickly closing her journal and sliding it into her backpack, she closed the zipper and slung it over her shoulder. Evangeline reached the window, using her magic again to melt the glass pane. With more experience now, it melted faster, and her feet were on the pavement running within a minute.

It was still pitch black outside, and the night was still young. Evangeline's heart was racing as she ran down the quiet streets of New Orleans. Her breath was ragged and her legs were worn. Marcel's men had figured out her escape plan and burst through the motel room door seconds after she jumped. They were gaining on her, and even with her vampire speed, they were hot on her tail. Evangeline veered left into an alleyway, stopping immediately when she saw a brick wall at the end of it. She spun around, hoping to get back out, but Ethan and Travis stood at the opening, blocking her way.

"Marcel wants you to return to the compound, Evangeline." Ethan barked. "He's a patient man but if you make him work for it...."

"Then he'll kill you." Travis smirked, finishing his partner's sentence.

"I am not going anywhere with you two." Evangeline took a step back, her hand twitching, ready to defend herself. "Marcel may have turned me to join his little army but the only reason he wants me back is because he knows what I am. I'm not going to let him use my power against innocent people."

"We're not asking nicely, Evangeline." Ethan growled. "Marcel wants you now. The longer you wait, the madder he'll be."

"He won't kill me." She taunted. "I'm too important to his little plan to grab more power. That's all any of us are for! He says family is power, but all of you mean nothing to him, all of his precious guys mean nothing to him. He wants power, Ethan. Like he said before, he's the king. We're just his subjects and you're so obedient that you'd even risk your life for him, wouldn't you?"

"He's our leader, Evangeline. He gave us immortality, and for that we are in his debt." Ethan replied.

"We do everything he says because of what he made us." Travis joined in. "And lately, the top job that we've had to worry about is tracking you down, and taking you back where you belong."
