"Am I interrupting?"
Evangeline's head whipped up to see Elijah's wide form standing in the doorway.
"No, not at all." She shook her head. "I was just finding something to do before I went to sleep."
Elijah stepped through the doorway, closing the door behind him, before he crossed the room. Seating himself on the side of the bed with a glass of bourbon in his hand, he watched her shift to sit more comfortably. Evangeline was tucked underneath the covers and having him seated so close made her feel uneasy, though it wasn't a bad uneasy. It was an uneasy that caused the butterflies in her stomach to stir and prep for flight.
"I wanted to see if you were okay. I know what happened earlier probably came as confusing to you."
It had only been a few hours since Hayley and Hope left, but since then, the Mikaelsons all had been acting a bit strange. Not wanting to get caught up in any of it, Evangeline had retreated to her room to read. However, as much as she disliked to admit it, her mind had been focused more on Hayley's strange reaction than on anything she was reading.
"Elijah?" She asked quietly.
"Yes?"
"Why didn't Hayley seem to like me? Would it have to do with my mother?"
"I think that may be part of it." Elijah nodded. "I've told her about Céleste and she went through a few instances with her-"
"Hayley met her?"
"Your mother was the entire reason Hope knows her father. She made sure that the moment Hayley stepped into New Orleans, she could find some way to strike a deal with my family by using the baby as leverage. If she hadn't, I have no doubt that Hayley would have had that baby on her own and Niklaus would have had no idea that he had a daughter."
Evangeline didn't say anything in response, but simply stared at her fingers which were laying flat in her lap. After a few moments, she finally spoke.
"I know about you two. It was written in the journal."
"I'm not surprised." Elijah let out a deep sigh. "Does it say why we ended things?"
"Yes." Evangeline replied, nodding her head. "It says that you two decided to stay family and nothing more."
"That's only your mother's take on it." His brown eyes softened when they met mine. "The real reason Hayley and I called things off was because I couldn't tell her what she needed to hear. She waited long enough and was tired of doing so."
"I'm sorry. I didn't know." Evangeline quickly apologized, feeling guilty for jumping to conclusions right away.
"It's okay, darling. How would you have? That journal of yours is efficient, but on some things, the facts don't always cover the whole truth."
"Elijah, why-" Evangeline stopped mid sentence as Rebekah entered the room, her mouth open as if she was going to say something, but then she stopped.
"I'm sorry!" She threw up her hands during her apology. "I'll come back later."
"No, sister, what is it?" Elijah stopped her from leaving.
"It's Nik. He wanted to speak with you."
"Okay." Elijah stood from the bed, taking one last glance at Evangeline. "We can finish whatever you were going to ask me later, okay?"
Evangeline nodded.
"He's in the study." Rebekah called as Elijah brushed past her, continuing down the hall.
The moment Elijah was down the stairs and out of earshot, Rebekah closed the door and plopped down beside Evangeline on the bed.
"I couldn't help but overhear your conversation with my brother." She giggled, urging Evangeline to scoot over so that she could lay in the bed beside her.
"You were eavesdropping?"
"Trust me, Evangeline. When you're a thousand years old, you don't find much joy in life anymore. Now, do you want to question what I do for fun or do you want to hear the details on Hayley and Elijah?"
"Was there more than what he told me?" Evangeline asked, her eyebrows raising.
"Of course! There always is! Why would you trust a man's word over a woman? A woman can tell you so much more and give you all the details."
"Alright." Evangeline laughed. "Tell me."
"Hayley and Elijah were interested in each other the moment they met. After your mother told my brothers about Hope, Elijah was bent on keeping Hayley safe, mostly due to the fact that Nik wanted nothing to do with her or the baby. But, Elijah, being the family man he is, couldn't stand the idea of letting Nik's child go, so he fought for Hayley, which ultimately gained her respect. Much like it did yours, actually."
"Get to the rest of the story." Evangeline rolled her eyes at Rebekah's joking demeanor.
"So anyway, as time went on, the two begun to develop for feelings for one another, and Hayley wasn't afraid to tell my brother how she felt. However, Elijah was never one to put himself before his family, so he didn't quite know how to express himself in that way anymore. Not in a long time. So ultimately, Hayley moved on, married a wolf leader, united their packs and created an army of super wolves. In the end her husband ended up dying, but at least he was able to tell her how he felt. Hayley never got over the fact that Elijah couldn't seem to say how he felt even after knowing her for so long. I think she still holds a bit of anger about it, as well as raging jealousy. She does still like him, but I think what really pissed her off today, was you. She saw Elijah jump up to introduce you. She saw his reassuring touches and his smiles, but most of all, when we told the story about when we first found you, it was Elijah who brought you home. I don't think Hayley likes to possibility of Elijah having any type of attraction towards you, and I definitely don't think she likes how infatuated you are with him."
"What?" Evangeline's lips dropped into a frown. "I'm not infatuated with Elijah. That's ridiculous. I barely even know him."
Rebekah tilted her head back and laughed. "Oh, how wrong you are. You may not know it yet, Evangeline, but mark my words, at some point, you're going to fall head over heals in love with him. You can count on that."
"You're insane." Evangeline shook her head. "You may have been alive for a thousand years, but that's definitely enough time for you to lose your mind."
"Mark my words, Evangeline Dubois." Rebekah winked as she rose from the bed and turned to exit the room. "Mark my words."
