Evangeline awoke with a start. Her breathing was ragged and her heart was racing. The dream she had was still evident in her mind and she couldn't seem to shake it. When she awoke and tried to sit up, something had stopped her. Glancing down at the moving form laying beside her, Evangeline was quick to find herself tangled up in Elijah. He had awoken seconds after she did and was now whispering calming words into her ear. She felt his arm around her and his fingers were trailing reassuring patterns on the bare skin of her shoulder. Evangeline felt immediately self conscious. She now was acutely aware of her almost bare state and quickly moved from the bed to get away. Elijah's eyes followed her as she stepped towards the bathroom, giving him one last glance before entering it. Elijah sighed, standing up himself and retreating down the hall to retrieve their clothes from the dryer.
Evangeline heard him leave from inside of the bathroom and let loose a large sigh. She sat down on top of the toilet seat and set her face in her hands. Waking up from a horrifying dream was one thing. Waking up from it beside Elijah, finding their limbs tangled together was another. As good as it felt, she knew it was wrong. Elijah was her mother's lover. It was wrong to want to be with him. When the door to the room opened again, she found Elijah folding her clothes on the bed. Without saying a word, she began to dress while he did the same. After a few minutes, Elijah excused himself to go and find food.
Evangeline stood looking out the window watching the clouds gather in the sky. It was sprinkling lightly outside, but it was not as bad as the night before. She let out a deep sigh. As much as she fought it, her mind kept wandering to Elijah. It felt sinful to enjoy being in his arms as much as she did. It felt sinful to want to kiss him, to want him to envelope her body in his strong grasp. It felt sinful to want him to touch her in a way that no man had ever before. She hated it. She wanted to push her feelings into a hole and bury them forever. However, those feelings had a mind of their own. They continued to dig their way out every time she buried them.
Evangeline seated herself on the edge of the bed. Leaning back against the pillows, she turned her head towards where Elijah had slept just hours ago. If she concentrated hard enough, she could still smell his intoxicating cologne on the pillow. Sitting up immediately, Evangeline tried to snap herself out of it. When Elijah entered the room, he simply set a blood bag down on the nightstand beside her and walked over towards the curtains. Evangeline swung her legs over the side of the bed and lifted the bag from the nightstand.
"Where did you get this?" She asked, her voice quiet and meek.
"I compelled the nurse from a hospital nearby." Elijah responded, not turning to look at her. "I figured that you were hungry and didn't want to feed on a human."
Evangeline didn't respond but quietly began sipping on the blood and enjoying the satisfying taste as it slid down her throat. Watching him closely, she stood from the bed and wandered over to where he stood by the window. Outside, they watched people packing up their things as they prepared to leave.
"It's a beautiful day." Elijah commented, his eyes flicking towards Evangeline.
She quickly pulled the blood bag from her mouth to respond, but managed to spill a little bit down her chin. As she moved to clean it, Elijah lifted up his hand and wiped it off with the pad of his thumb, brushing past her bottom lip in the process. Evangeline's mouth parted as Elijah slowly pulled his hand away from her face and placed his thumb in his mouth. Her heart began to race in her ears as he stepped closer, setting his fingers on her neck and tilting her head upwards.
"We should head back." He whispered, his brown eyes scanning over her face.
"We should." Evangeline stammered as he slid his thumb directly underneath her jaw, letting it rest on her throat.
Elijah let the hint of a smile form on his lips as he dropped his hand and turned away. Evangeline stood by the window breathless.
"Come, Evangeline." Elijah called from the open door. "My siblings are probably quite worried about our whereabouts."
Evangeline hurried to follow Elijah out of the room and down the hall of the hotel, quickly stuffing the rest of the blood bag into her purse as they entered the elevator. Once retreating to the first floor, she and Elijah continued their way through the lobby out to the car.
"How long do you think the drive will be?" Evangeline asked, settling into the passenger's seat.
"About an hour and a half." Elijah responded, starting up the car. "Two hours at the max."
Great. Evangeline thought. Two more hours alone with Elijah.
