Evangeline stood in the middle of the forest, her dark eyes trained on the land in front of her. From behind, Elijah emerged, shrugging off his suit jacket and laying it neatly over a low hanging tree branch. Evangeline stood still, waiting patiently for his orders. Elijah stepped up behind her, his tall form towering over her small one. She could see the large shadow that he cast on the forest floor and she could feel his hot breath on the back of her head.

"Freya had mentioned that you lack the skills of hand to hand combat. Being able to fight for yourself plays a significant role in your survival as a vampire. Now tell me, if you were to have your magic repressed, what would you do to save yourself?"

"I don't know." Evangeline replied quietly, every confidence that she had with Kol, Freya, and even Rebekah, completely melting away the moment she was alone with Elijah. He made her feel intimidated, small, nervous, and he tended to make her heart skip a beat.

"You would have no idea where to start?"

"Well, I guess I would start by trying to get away-"

"And say perhaps an enemy were to grab you?" Elijah suddenly wrapped his arms around her waist, tugging her against his body and capturing her wrists in his large hands. His lips were at her ear and Evangeline shivered. "What would you do then?"

Evangeline didn't know how to respond. Her first instinct was always to fight off an enemy with magic. Without it, she didn't know how to defend herself.

"I don't know." She looked to the ground.

Elijah felt Evangeline's body completely stiffen against his own, and he released his hold on her.

"I want to help you, Evangeline." He sighed, walking back around to face her.

"Why?" Evangeline suddenly got up the courage to speak more clearly.

Elijah stared at her for a moment, a little stunned at her question, but he answered. "Because if someone had done the same thing for myself and my siblings, I'm quite certain history would have unfolded differently."

"I'm sorry." She apologized. "I know you don't want to do this."

"Now, where did you get an idea like that?"

"I could tell from your expression yesterday that you didn't want to be the one to train me. You wanted Freya or Kol to do it."
