Evangeline slid back into her side of the car, frazzled and as confused as ever. Elijah had just kissed her and labeled it a mistake. Feeling hurt and a little bit embarrassed, she sat up and turned in his direction.

"I need you to answer me honestly, Elijah." She caught his attention. "Why was that kiss a mistake?"

"Because you're Céleste's daughter." He said it easily, his words cutting like knives.

Evangeline felt like she was hit by an avalanche.

"Oh." The word fell from her lips as soon as her throat loosened its grip and allowed in fresh air.

"I'm sorry." Elijah replied quickly, seeing the disappointment flash across her face.

"I-It's fine." She stammered, turning back towards the window and struggling to overcome the hurt that filled her entire being.

But it wasn't fine.

Ever since she had begun living with the family, Evangeline had noticed restrictions and a certain way that the Mikaelsons would all act around her. She would notice how carefully they worded things, like she could go off at any second, and how, even though they were all comfortable with her, the thought of what she could do seemed very prominent in their minds. And it was all because of her mother. Her mother. The woman who had once meant everything to her was the cause of everything. She controlled every aspect of Evangeline's life when she was alive, and she still had control over her from the grave. Céleste Dubois was the reason for why the Mikaelsons acted the way that they did around her. She was the reason that Evangeline's powers survived her transition. She was the reason Elijah regretted kissing her. The spark was there, she knew it, she could feel it, but her mother ended it. The only man who she had learned to trust and care for, pushed her away because of her mother.

However, maybe it wasn't because of her mother at all. Maybe it was about what she had been taught all along.

Evangeline's mind drifted back to Elijah and her mother. He had learned to love her, but when he got too close, Niklaus killed her. Throughout all of the years after, he was scared to love again, and therefore, never went after another woman. She remembered what Rebekah said, and how when Elijah was with Hayley, he couldn't tell her how he felt because of what happened in the past. Evangeline begun to see a pattern. Elijah's emotions were what made him to turn away. He was scared to show any sort of feelings because if he did, his family could get in the way. Evangeline remembered reading her mother's journal the first time. She remembered the first few pages, and the most important warning that she had been given. The Mikaelsons never put anyone else above family. They always have each other as their top priorities, and everyone else crumbles beneath them. Evangeline had never witnessed this firsthand, but she did notice the lengths that the family had gone through for her, and she wasn't even family.

What if there was ever a decision in the future where Elijah had to choose between her and one of his siblings? Would he leave her behind to crumble like her mother had said?

Evangeline glanced at Elijah out of the corner of her eye and folded her arms over one another against the door, gently resting her chin on top of them. Her mind continued to spin, circling around the concept on how tough things could get if Elijah hadn't regretted his decision. Evangeline realized how right he was. There were consequences, big ones, and she wasn't willing to face them not knowing if she could count on him in return. He was right. Her mother was a valid enough reason to not be with her. He was right. The kiss was a mistake.

Evangeline lifted her head from her arms, staring out at the trees passing by. As she viewed the beautiful scenery that stretched out for miles beyond the road, she made up her mind about what she was going to do. Elijah was no longer going to be in her thoughts. He was nothing more than a man who was not to be fully trusted. He was a man who could never love, who could never bring her the happiness that she craved. He was everything wrong for her, and he was everything her mother wouldn't have wanted.

He was a Mikaelson.

As the car pulled into the driveway of the house, Evangeline didn't say a word as she stepped out of the car. Elijah paused where he stood, not getting to the door in time before she opened it herself. Evangeline walked past him and up the steps. She entered the front entrance hall, and immediately disappeared up the stairs leaving Elijah to wonder where she went once inside. The moment he walked into the door, however, Rebekah cornered him.

"What the hell happened?"

"I'm sorry?" Elijah asked, stepping aside to close the door as he entered.

"What the hell happened with you and Evangeline?" Rebekah hissed, narrowing her eyes at him. "She went directly upstairs to her room and didn't speak to anyone. What did you do?!"

"Why do you automatically assume that I did something wrong?" Elijah scoffed, clearly offended.

"Because when it comes to women, you're not necessarily the smoothest person." She rolled her eyes.

"I can vouch for that." Kol laughed as he entered from the kitchen. "Trust me, brother, you may attract the ladies, but you do not know how to handle them, nor do you know how to keep one."

"Oh, and I suppose you do?" Elijah growled in an annoyed tone.

"Of course I do." Kol grinned.

"Enough." Rebekah snapped, bringing both of their attentions back to her. "Elijah, are you going to tell me what happened?"

"Rebekah, nothing happened. I took her into Gulfport to practice her compulsion, we got stuck there overnight, and then we came home. That was it."

"Bullshit." Rebekah replied, her eyebrows knitting together. "You and I both know that's a lie."

"I'm sorry, sister, but that's the truth." Elijah stated flatly. "Now, if you excuse me."

He gently brushed past her and disappeared into the kitchen, leaving Kol and Rebekah alone.

"He's lying. I know it." She huffed, crossing her arms over her chest.

"I know." Kol responded. "Something happened either today or yesterday, and I want you to find out what. I'm not sure you're going to get it from our brother, though, but, Evangeline might squeal."

"I doubt it, Kol." Rebekah sighed. "I don't think she'll tell me either."

"You're an original vampire, dear sister." Kol gave her an evil grin. "Just compel her."
