The Other Side by Colton Dixon

Evangeline didn't think anything could have hurt as much as losing her mother... but loosing Cara? That was a different kind of pain. The pain of loss when it was her own child, knowing that under different circumstances, Cara could have lived of long and happy life, was in unbearable. Evangeline was devastated. It felt like there was a gaping hole in her chest that ached with every breath. She wanted to scream, to cry, and ended up doing both. But it didn't make her feel any better. She still heard the screams of her baby in her head on an endless loop, still saw visions of Marcel with a dagger as he slit her baby's throat. It haunted her day in and day out like and bad dream she was forced to live awake.

Elijah took Cara's death hard. He blamed himself for what happened. If only he had ignored Marcel's invitation. If only he had insisted harder for Evangeline to stay home and protect their daughter. Maybe none of this would have happened. Maybe he wouldn't have lost possibly the only child he would ever have.

The rest of the Mikaelson siblings mourned the death of their niece - even Klaus. Kol immediately returned after having been informed of what happened, pulling Evangeline into a tight hug and offering to hold her for hours. In the end, that was really the last time any of them saw her out of the bedroom. Most days now, she and Elijah hid away. Elijah would come out every couple of days to get meals to sustain them. He would briefly talk to his siblings, telling them how Evangeline remained in the same position, curled up in their bed holding their daughter's corpse. She knew that if she let go, she would have to come to terms with reality, and at the moment in time, reality was too much for her to bare. Before she knew it, three weeks had passed and the days all dragged into one another.

"She won't let go." Elijah murmured, staring into the black coffee in his mug. "She's been up there cradling our little girl's body since that night. I can't get her to eat, to sleep..."

As he trailed off, he looked up at his siblings where they were all scattered across the kitchen.

"She needs time to mourn." Freya spoke softly. "But Evangeline won't be able to do that properly until she puts her daughter to rest. If Cara was meant to be a witch like her mother, we need to give her a proper burial. You said she's been having visions of what happened? Maybe if Cara's finally at peace, they won't haunt Evangeline anymore."

"I'll try." Elijah nodded, letting out a haggard sigh.

He returned to their bedroom with a cup of blood in his hand. As he entered, he felt his heart clench in pain as he saw her. She was still in the same position on their bed, Cara held close to her body, like she was terrified to let go. Elijah approached the bed and gently sat on the side of it, reaching forward to wipe a drying tear off her cheek with the pad of his thumb.
