The radio was softly playing in the background as Evangeline stared out the window. She watched the road pass underneath the car and the trees disappear behind it. To her left, Elijah sat with one hand on the wheel and the other leaning against the door. Every so often, he would glance in her direction before seeming to scold himself in which he would then look away. Evangeline pretended to not to notice when he did so, but in her head she was contemplating whether or not she should break the silence. The car ride so far had been very uneventful and neither vampire had spoken to the other since they had left the hotel.

After the quiet had become apparent, Evangeline grew restless. She wondered what had become of Elijah the past day. His change in demeanor confused her more than Niklaus did. One moment he was calm and joking and the next he was acting like he didn't want to speak. She didn't understand why he was acting in such a way, and what had happened the last day confused her even more. Back when she was in the Mikaelson home, she and Elijah spoke civilly, but never enough that a relationship could have formed. But, as they began training, she noticed Elijah's mood change. Over the last two months, he would go from kind to quiet in less than a second, making Evangeline unsure of how he was going to act each day. Throughout this trip, he seemed relaxed, up until they had to stay in the hotel. That night and the following morning just set up one awkward event after the other, and Elijah slipped back into silence. He had only broken it once while they talked by the window, but that was only for a brief moment. Just thinking about it made Evangeline frustrated. She didn't understand nor did she want to see it continue.

As Elijah pulled the car into the parking lot of a gas station, he slid out to fill up the tank. Evangeline watched him, her insides fuming. He didn't seem to notice how he was acting, and it bugged her beyond belief. When he attached the gas pump to the car, she shoved open the passenger door and stepped out, ready to voice her concern.

"Can you please explain to me why you've been acting so weird?" Evangeline stood before him with her arms crossed over her chest.

"Excuse me?" Elijah turned to face her, his eyebrows knitting up in confusion. "I'm acting weird?"

"Yes!" Evangeline growled, giving him an annoyed look. "I can never figure you out! One minute you're calm and relaxed and then the next, you're giving me the cold shoulder and won't say a word. You're telling me that's not weird?"

"I'm acting perfectly normal, Evangeline. I have no idea what you're talking about." Elijah simply brushed off the claim, making her even more upset.

"You're so infuriating!" She snapped, causing his eyes to widen at her sharp tone. "What happened to the man who saved me that night from Marcel's men? What happened to the man who trained me in the woods and taught me how to compel? That is the person that I want to see, not this man before me who pretends that I don't exist."

"Evangeline, I am not ignoring you. In fact, that is the one thing I can't seem to do." Elijah growled. "This trip was honestly just an escape for the both of us. I wanted to take you away from the worries of Marcel. I wanted to help you train and learn the pros of being a vampire. But instead, we get caught by a thunder storm and were forced to find a hotel. Do you know how hard it was for me to be in that bed with you last night? I couldn't stop thinking about you. And ever since we left, I can't seem to stop thinking about you. Evangeline, you've been on my mind constantly since I brought you home. I didn't want to admit it for the fear of confirming my siblings' suspicions, but I've now come to terms with how I feel. I like you a lot, Evangeline, and I can't do a damn thing about it. The consequences are too large, and that's why I've been shying away."

"Elijah, I-" Evangeline stammered, unable to believe what she was hearing.

Elijah let out a soft groan when she bit down on her bottom lip. Evangeline looked up at him, confused.

"Please don't do that. I can't stand it when you do that."

"I-I'm sorry." She murmured in response, looking down at her shoes.

"To hell with it." Elijah growled abruptly, causing Evangeline's head to whip back up.

In a split second, he took two large strides and his hands met her waist, pushing her against the side of the car and pressing his lips to hers. Evangeline let out a small gasp as her eyes fluttered closed. Elijah's hands slid around her waist, tugging her closer as she snaked her arms around his neck. Their lips moved together perfectly and Evangeline could feel the butterflies finally take flight in her stomach. They were fluttering everywhere. Her heart was also very present, pounding loudly in her ears and making the moment seem all too surreal. As she began to tangle her fingers in the hair at the bottom of his neck, Elijah's hands slid down her waist and splayed across the side of her thighs. Evangeline shivered underneath his touch, and by the time he pulled away, she was putty in his grasp. She stood tangled up in his limbs, her breath ragged and her eyes half closed. Elijah stared down at her swollen lips and Evangeline suddenly stood alert after seeing what looked like regret flash across his face.

"Elijah?" She whispered, seeing him step back and away from her rather quickly.

"I shouldn't have done that." He spoke flatly. "Forgive me."
