Evangeline awoke to the feeling of a warm chest pressed against her cheek. As she stirred, she soon discovered that she was curled up beside Elijah. After their fight the night before, she wearily sat up, meeting his gaze. At first, his face was blank, not showing any signs of emotion, but it soon softened as he reached up to tuck a piece of her hair behind her ear.
"I wanted a chance to talk." He whispered, a deep sigh slipping from his lips.
"I'm not going to apologize for showing myself to Marcel last night." Evangeline spoke flatly. "I did what I thought was right for both us and the baby."
"I know." Elijah replied calmly. "I wanted to tell you that I after taking some time to think about it, I now understand where you were coming from. Even though your decision may have not aligned with my own, my siblings helped me realize that parenting is a team effort. We both are responsible for making decisions together. We're a team, and last night, I unfortunately didn't conform to that. Forgive me, Evangeline."
"You are a kind and understanding man, Elijah Mikaelson." Evangeline breathed, reaching up to place her hand against his cheek. "Those are only a few of the reasons I fell in love with you. I appreciate the fact that you stepped back from your own values to see both sides, and I know that slipping into the parent role isn't going to be easy."
"We're going do this together." Elijah nodded, motioning for her to cuddle up against him again. "One day at a time."
"Okay." Evangeline whispered, laying her cheek against his chest.
"We're going to need to be kind and patient with one another." He continued. "And most of all, we're going to need to be honest with each other."
Evangeline froze, sensing a double meaning behind his words. As she lifted her head up to meet him in the eyes, she could see his chocolate brown irises become cloudy. Narrowing her eyes and scrunching up her eyebrows, she cocked her head to the side as if to inquire his statement. Elijah sighed and brought his hand to her cheek.
"What are you not telling me about your mother?" He spoke softly.
"Freya told you." Evangeline took a deep breath. "When?"
"The night you had your vision of Marcel. She told me you confessed information to her that you made her swear to keep hidden, but she didn't tell me what it was." Elijah's eyes searched hers. "Please don't keep anything from me, Evangeline. If there's something I should know about your mother, you need to tell me."
"Okay." Evangeline nodded. "But you have to promise not to get upset."
"I will do my very best not to." Elijah replied.
Evangeline laid back down on his chest, not wanting to meet his eyes when she finally spoke.
"The day I found out I was pregnant, my mother came to me in a vision. She told me that I was born unable to conceive. After months of searching, she found a spell that would restart the organs I needed to have a child. She soon found out that the side effects of the spell would last whether I was human or not."
She paused for a moment to catch her breath, waiting for Elijah to speak. When he didn't, she continued.
"A couple of months later, Freya found out, and the two of us were able to piece together the spell that my mother used with the strange abilities I seem to have. She figured out that the spell not only started up what I needed in order to conceive a child, but it kept all of my organs alive when I died. My body didn't shut down like it was supposed to, which means it stayed exactly the same as before I turned. On the outside, I'm a vampire, but on the inside, I'm a human. That's how I was able to retain my magic."
Elijah didn't respond right away. He stayed quiet for several moments. When Evangeline dared to picked her head up and meet his eyes, his gaze softened immediately and he leaned down to kiss her on the forehead.
"Thank you for confiding in me, darling."
"I'm sorry I didn't tell you sooner. I was just afraid that my mother..." Evangeline paused, realizing that she was entering territory that she had tried desperately to avoid.
"Afraid that your mother would what?" Elijah raised an eyebrow. "Evangeline, what are you keeping from me?"
Evangeline sighed, knowing that she couldn't keep it hidden forever.
"When I spoke to my mother, she told me how disappointed she was in me. She hated how I let myself trust your family and go against everything she raised me to be. As a result, she claimed that I would be raising my child alone, that with your family, would follow all of your enemies. She doesn't think that our child, or I, will be able to survive."
"Love, you know in your heart that is untrue." Elijah whispered, holding me tightly against him. "You and our little one growing inside of you are my family. You both are Mikaelsons now, and Mikaelsons stick together always and forever, right?"
"But what if-"
"You are not going to be alone in this. I promise you. My family and I will be right by your side. We will defeat any enemies that come our way, Marcel, and if it comes to it, we will defeat your mother as well."
"How can you be so sure?"
"Love always helps us get through the toughest of times. If you can believe that, we will be able to overcome anything."
"You always know what to say to make me feel better." Evangeline sighed.
"Is your mind at ease now, my love?"
"For the most part." She nodded, snuggling in next to him.
"The rest will come with time." Elijah replied, gently stroking her hair. "I know that one day, we will all finally be at ease. When that day comes, we'll be ready."'
