It had been hours since Evangeline had gone downstairs. Since the rest of the Mikaelson clan had left, she remained hidden in her room, not daring to even face Elijah out fear of the awkward tension between the two of them. The two vampires simply kept to their own floors of the house, not wanting to bother the other. However, when the feeling of hunger dawned on Evangeline as the evening sun began to dip behind the mountains, she realized that she would have to face the tension and venture into his territory.
After waiting a few more minutes, she finally gave in. Throwing the comforter back and setting aside the book she had been reading, Evangeline took a deep breath and descended the stairs. As she made her way towards the kitchen, she soon spotted Elijah sitting at the kitchen table with a cup of coffee, dressed up in a suit and tie just like he always was. As she quietly slipped towards the fridge, pulling out a blood bag and pouring herself some dinner, she could feel his intense gaze boring into her back. The sound of thunder rumbling caused her to look up out the kitchen window. As she gazed out at the backyard, she saw dark clouds gathering in the sky, pellets of rain beginning to fall to the earth below. Evangeline pulled her attention from the window, placing the blood bag back in the fridge and leaning against the countertop to slowly sip the contents of her cup. The red liquid slid down her throat with ease and she instantly felt her body relax at the taste of the blood on her tongue. After a few minutes of absolute silence, she finally worked up enough courage to face Elijah. The moment their eyes met, he stared at her intently, before looking away seconds later. Evangeline felt her gaze drift back down to hardwood floor, refusing to look up as she heard the scrape of Elijah's chair on the hardwood floor. Not daring to move her line of sight from the floor, she simply sipped her dinner daintily, not making eye contact with him as he walked past her to place his coffee cup in the sink. For a split second, she made the mistake of looking up, catching sight of his chocolate brown eyes, and feeling her insides melt. When his lips parted, she waited for him to speak, but nothing ever came out. Instead, he sighed and began to wash out his cup with the soapy water. Evangeline's eyes flicked back towards the ground before she felt her brain blurt out the words she knew she could never say on her own.
"Do you ever think we are going to be able to speak to each other normally again?"
Her outburst seemed to catch Elijah off guard and he nearly dropped the cup as he was washing it. Gently rinsing it off under the faucet and setting it in the drying rack, Elijah moved to dry his hands on a nearby towel before responding.
"That depends." He chuckled, resting his hip against the countertop as he turned to face her.
"On what?" Evangeline asked, the space between her eyebrows crinkling up in confusion.
"On whether or not you are still determined to turn yourself over to Marcel."
"I already told you that I wouldn't."
"You may have been able to fool my siblings, but you can't fool me, Evangeline. I know the thought is still floating around in that pretty head of yours."
Evangeline hated the fact that he was right. She hated that he could sense she was still pondering over it, and she hated that he seemed to know exactly what she was thinking.
"Fine." She sighed in defeat. "I'll admit that I had thought about turning myself in after I told your family that I wouldn't, but now, I've decided against it."
"What changed your mind?" Elijah raised an eyebrow.
"You." Evangeline replied quietly. "Even after everything we've all gone through, after the way you've acted, and the things that have happened, I can tell that you still care. I don't know why, but you do."
"Of course I care." Elijah let out a deep sigh, taking a step closer and reaching out to cup her cheek with his right hand. "I always will. I know I haven't shown it in the past few months, but I've grown to care about you a lot, more than I'd like to admit to myself. You've become a part of my life, Evangeline, and each day that passes, it becomes harder and harder for me to deny the truth."
"And what's that?" Evangeline whispered quietly as Elijah stepped close enough that their faces were centimeters apart.
"That I am crazy about you."
